The Joker is a disfigured and sadistic serial killer who went on a killing spree in Gotham City and became an enemy of the Batman, before he was apprehended and incarcerated in Arkham State Hospital.
History
Emergence and incarceration
In 2021, a deranged serial killer with a rictus grin and other physical deformities known only as the Joker terrorized Gotham City, slaughtering several people and baffling the Gotham City Police Department. He eventually came into conflict with the vigilante Batman, who he came to see as a fun challenge, though he ultimately incarcerated him in Arkham State Hospital.[1]
The Riddler killings
The Batman visits the Joker
Nearly a year later in 2022, a new enigmatic serial killer called the Riddler began slaughtering Gotham's politicians and leaving riddles addressed to the Batman. Reluctantly, the Batman went to Arkham and asked the Joker for his perspective on the case. Upon examining the evidence, he concluded that the Riddler had personal reasons for wanting to take down Gotham's elite, though didn't reveal any more insight before the Batman left.[1]
Befriending the Riddler
A few days later, after the Riddler had exposed the city's inner ring of corruption to the public, he was detained in Arkham in a cell near the Joker's. As he'd planned, the bombs he'd planted along the seawall detonated and flooded the city, but the Batman stopped his followers from killing the new mayor-elect. In the Riddler's defeat, the Joker called out to him from his own cell, and convinced him that they could become allies for a future partnership.[2]

- The Joker was portrayed by Barry Keoghan
- The Joker went unnamed and was kept in shadow in The Batman, with Keoghan being credited as "Unseen Arkham Prisoner". However, director and co-writer Matt Reeves confirmed in an interview that the character was indeed the Joker, although he had no specific plans for him in the future.[3]
- In order to keep Keoghan's role as the Joker a secret, Warner Bros. issued a press release that listed him playing Officer Stanley Merkel.
- The scene where the Batman interrogated the Joker to learn more about the Riddler was cut from The Batman, but was later released via the promotional website rataalada.com, which releases material canon to the film's universe.[1]
