Shadows West is a three-issue Jonah Hex storyline published under the Vertigo Comics imprint. It's the third Hex series by Joe R. Lansdale and Tim Truman whose earlier offerings include Two-Gun Mojo and Riders of the Worm and Such. Under the Vertigo imprint usually known for dark fantasy themes, the series uses the Western-Horror genre and involves Hex encountering spirit people.
Jonah Hex is on trial for murdering a family of brothers in self-defense, and when the Judge releases him the town tries to kill him anyway. Engaged in a gunfight with half the town, he is assisted by a quick-shooting circus midget named Long Tom. Long Tom suggest that he could find good work in trick shooting at his traveling Wild West show, and introduces him to his boss Buffalo Will. Jonah also finds that his old friend Spotted Balls is working there. Bizarrely, he meets the local Native American prostitute and finds that her child is a Bear Boy. It is explained that she conceived her child after she was visited by a spirit person, causing her to give birth to a bear. Hex decides to leave the circus with Spotted Balls and the squaw, as he dislikes the way things are run. Buffalo Will is furious, and sends a team led by Long Tom to track them down and murder them. Jonah sets traps during their hunt and murders several of them, although in the final gunfight Spotted Balls is killed while Hex shoots the rest of them dead. The squaw is brought back to her child's father, and Jonah Hex meets the spirit people who are half-man and half-bear. Returning to Buffalo Will with Long Tom's corpse, he tells the entertainer that if he ever sees him again he'll kill him. Jonah Hex rides off into the sunset.
