Synopsis for "Trouble Comes in Threes"
Jonah Hex is sharing a fire with a miner outside the cave entrance to the mine where five thieves are holed up. Two of the thieves rush out of the cave and Hex shoots them. The other three decide to give up, asking Hex to promise them safe passage to the nearest sheriff's office. Hex agrees.
Meanwhile, three female circus performers, Annie, Daisy and Kimiko, confront their boss about fair wages. It seems he has not paid them, using the excuse that their wages have been going toward expenses the women have incurred. A scuffle ensues and the women grab some of the money from the office and run. In the scuffle, the tent catches fire.
At the nearest sheriff's office to the mine, the three thieves are locked up in a cell and Hex is waiting for the funds due him for bringing the men in. The funds are supposed to arrive by coach in the morning. In the meantime, Hex heads across the street. A woman by the name of Betsy enters the sheriff's office with a tray of food for the jailed men. When one of the men takes the tray, he feels the knife taped to the bottom of the tray, quickly removes it and holds it to Betsy's throat, threatening to kill her if the sheriff doesn't open the jail cell. The sheriff opens the cell and the three thieves escape with "Betty," who is actually one of the thieves' sister, Darla. Riding out of town, the thieves cross paths with the three female circus performers.
The circus performers stop in at the sheriff's office, find him trussed up and free him. The women learn from the sheriff that there is a bounty on the thieves and tell him that they passed the thieves on their way in to town. Hoping to earn the bounty themselves, they tell the sheriff the thieves were headed east, when in fact they were riding west. Two of the circus performers ride after the thieves, while one of them goes across the street to the Hoffman's saloon and hotel, to keep Jonah Hex busy.
Using her feminine wiles, Annie lures Hex upstairs to his room, where she keeps him occupied. Later, there is pounding at the door and Hex answers it to find a man telling him that the thieves he captured earlier have escaped and a posse is being organized to go after them. Hex prepares to leave and Anne knocks him out by hitting him on the head with a gas lamp. Hex awakens later, tied to a chair. He breaks the chair, loosens his bonds and takes off after Annie.
The three escaped thieves have held up a stagecoach and are debating whether they should kill the passengers. On a nearby Cliff, Daisy and Kimiko are watching and discussing what their next move should be when Jonah Hex appears with Annie slung over his shoulder and a shotgun pointed at the other two ladies. Kimiko sets her hawk on Hex, causing him to fire a wild shot and warning the thieves below. Hex tells Kimiko to call off her bird or he'll shoot it and she does. Daisy frees Annie and Annie takes a swing at Hex, only succeeding in falling of the cliff. Annie manages to snag a branch, but she is out of reach. Forming a chain, Daisy, Kimiko and Hex, who is holding extending a bullwhip from his hand, lift Annie up the cliff.
By this time, the thieves have scattered and Hex and the women part ways. Hex returns to the mine and leaves bags of gold (presumably those that the thieves stole) with the miner. He makes the miner promise never to speak of this to anyone and leaves.
