Jonathan-El[2] is Jon Kent's counterpart from the Inverse World.

Jon-El is the son of the famous superhero Kal-El and Lois Lane. In addition to being a hero Kal-El was also a celebrity who spent little time with his family, which Jon deeply resented. Around his fifteenth birthday, he discovered that he had inherited his father's powers. At first he kept this a secret but was forced to reveal them when a man almost fell to his death while his father was distracted by a photo-op.

Jon became his father's sidekick and, while he initially enjoyed the spotlight and greater attention from his father, he still ultimately felt empty and he was desperately searching for meaning in his life. He began dating a famous actress named Misty who introduced him to Ally Allston. She told him that there was another world where everyone had an "inverse" counterpart, and that he would only feel complete if he merged with his other self. She proved to Jon that the other world was real by drugging him and allowing him to see the other world through his counterpart's eyes. Jon found her message convincing and when Kal-El and Lois tried to convince Jon to break away from Ally, he angrily told them that they had no right to tell him what to do as they had never been real parents to him. He left home and joined Ally's cult, and was also able to convince his uncle Tal-Rho and aunt Lana to join.

Ally planned to seize control of the government and sent Jon and Lana to the military's Project 4377 to steal their X-Kryptonite weapons to fight off Kal-El if necessary. The project was being overseen by his grandfather General Sam Lane, and Lois and his brother Jordan-El were also there, having just left Kal-El. Lois told Jon she was sorry that she had failed him as a mother and begged him to come back to them, but Jon ignored her and simply told his family to disappear if they would not join Ally.[1]

With the help of Jon and followers granted superpowers by Green Kryptonite, Ally took power and announced to the world her plans to merge the two worlds. In order to do so she needed her pendant, an ancient artefact dating back to when the worlds split apart. To foil her plans, Kal-El stole the pendant and escaped to the other world.[3] Months later, Ally received a communication from her other self via one of her followers Mitchell Anderson, whose counterpart had managed to obtain her pendant and joined up with the other Ally, who owned an identical pendant needed to complete the merge.[4]

The two Allys had agreed that the other Ally, Anderson and some other followers would cross over to their world via the interdimensional rift that Kal-El had left when he broke the dimensional barrier, however, only Anderson came through carrying both pendants. Ally demanded to know what was happening, as her counterpart would have never willingly given up her pendant, but she and Anderson could not understand each other as his speech was reversed compared to hers. Anderson fused the two pendants together and began to merge with his counterpart. Ally ordered Jon to kill the other Anderson as she refused to let anyone "ascend" before her and after a moment's hesitation he did so, the first time he had ever killed anyone. Anderson fled and despite Ally putting out a bulletin ordering anyone who saw Anderson to turn him in, he seemingly disappeared.[1]

Eventually the other Ally managed to cross over using the containment suit the Kal-El wore when he went through the portal. The other Ally joined them and revealed that when she had first tried to cross over her followers had been disintegrated by the rift's energy, and only people with superpowers or who used a protective suit could make the trip safely.[5] When Kal-El's counterpart Superman followed the other Ally through the portal they suspected he may be able to lead them to Anderson and so sent Jon-El to meet him and gain his trust. Jon met up with Superman at the Fortress of Solitude in Antarctica and took Superman to his family home. Jon asked Superman where the pendants were and when Superman replied that he didn't know, Jon began beating him in a rage, demanding to know where Anderson was. Ubeknownst to him, Anderson was hiding out on the farm along with Lois, Sam and Jordan. Anderson knocked Jon unconscious and tied him up with a chunk of X-Kryptonite to weaken him.

However, when Jon did not report back the Allys went to Bizarro's farm, taking Tal-Rho and Lana with them. Jon broke free and fought Anderson while Tal-Rho and Lana fought Superman for the pendants. Jon eventually defeated and killed Anderson thanks to his greater experience with his powers, and particularly at aerial combat. Jon took the fused pendant from Superman and gave it to the Allys, who began to fuse together. They gave the pendant to Jon and told him to go to the other world, merge with his other self and prepare for their arrival.[1]

Jonathan crossed the portal between the dimensions. Although Superman had only been on his world for a day, a month had passed on the other world. He went to the Kent Farm and told Lois Lane and Jordan Kent that Superman had been "too late".[5] The other Jonathan arrived and Jon-El began to merge with him. The other world's version of Jordan, who possessed powers, tried to stop him but Jon easily threw him aside.

Superman chased Jon-El through the portal and arrived in time to break them apart before the fusion could be completed. Jon told Superman he couldn't stop what was coming and flew away. Jon tracked down the other world's version of Lana in a diner in Smallville, planning to kidnap her so that her counterpart could cross over and merge with her. The other Jonathan had a vision and saw where Jon was through his eyes. Superman chased him to his location in civilian garb, but Lana came out of the diner and, seeing him, stopped to talk to him. Jon realised that Superman had a secret identity and would not use his powers if he was not in costume, and that on this world he and Lana were friends. He ran away while Superman and Lana were talking.

Jon-El went to Lana's home and kidnapped her, planning to use her as bait to draw out Superman. He took her to an old slaughterhouse and built a Kryptonite bomb out of an old gas tank. He placed the pendant on Lana and through it was able to communicate with the Lana of his world, telling her to come though. Superman tracked him to the slaughterhouse and Jon set off the bomb with his flame breath. Superman shielded Lana and was hit by many fragments of Kryptonite. Jon stabbed him in the chest with a larger shard and left to merge with Jonathan.

Jon-El returned to the Kent Farm, and Jordan came out to stop him. Jon-El initially dominated the fight but Jordan was able to rally as Jon-El was gradually weakened by the yellow sunlight. Jordan defeated Jon-El and knocked him unconscious. He was arrested and imprisoned in a military black site. Meanwhile, his world's Lana crossed over but was stopped in the Shuster mines by John Henry Irons and Natalie.[6]

Superman visited Jon-El in prison and tried to reach out to him, asking him to help save both worlds from Ally, but Jon refused. He told Superman that when Ally realised he had failed she would come through the portal herself.[7] As Jon predicted, Ally crossed over and drained Superman's energy, renderring him powerless and almost killing him. Ally sent Lana-Rho through the portal to finish the job while she merged the worlds together.[8]

Lana broke Jon-El out of prison and provided him with Kryptonite to restore his powers. They tracked Superman to Smallville High School where he was addressing a town hall meeting to warn them about the merge. Jon went after Superman while Lana attacked Jordan. Jon attacked the helpless Superman in front of his family, including Jonathan Kent. He easily beat the powerless Superman but Jordan Kent burst in, locked in a fight with Lana. Jordan managed to temporarily get the upper hand over them both, even matching Jon in a heat vision versus arctic vision fight, but he was simply outnumbered and the two inverses began beating him down. However, Natalie arrived in her armour and carrying her father's hammer to help Jordan, and together the two of them defeated the evil dopplegangers. Lana and Jon were both taken into custody by the DoD.[9]
