Jonathan Crane was a cowardly man. As he grew older, he studied the psychology of fear in order of overcome his anxiety. Using what he learned, Crane decided to terrorize Gotham City as a supervillian under the codename The Scarecrow.
History
Nothing to Fear
After learning of Green Lantern's reputation as being fearless. Seeing this as a challenge, The Scarecrow traveled to Coast City and infected the hero with his fear toxin. Unfortunately, he was freed from the hallucination by Wonder Woman and her Lasso of Truth. They tracked down Scarecrow, only for them to be exposed to fear toxin that gave them power-dampening phobias. Together, they overcame their fears and captured the mad chemist.[1]
