Jonathan Kent is the foster father of Ultraman.
History
New 52
Johnny Kent lived in an abusive relationship with his wife, Martha, because of their poor financial situation due to the gold mines closing and Martha's drug addiction which put their house in foreclosure. One night, while arguing with one another, they both discovered a rocketship with the baby Kal-Il inside. This cost Johnny his right hand, which was burnt off. The couple were coerced into raising him for a few years, until Kal-Il who killed them at the age of seven for trying to escape, before burying their bodies in the cornfield. He then destroyed their home before leaving.[1]
Infinite Frontier
After the events of Dark Nights: Death Metal, a new Earth 3 is created, changing the history of several characters, including the Kents. When Kal-El crashed into Earth, they raised him and exploited his powers for free labour, teaching him that obedience was the ultimate virtue and that people who did not contribute to society were to be reviled as "freeloaders." They also manipulated him to be emotionally dependent on them so that he would never leave the Kent Farm. In 1963, the Kents showed Kal his spacecraft and revealed to him that he was the last of his species, telling him they were all he had. They hoped this would make Kal afraid to ever break free of them, but in fact he turned on them, realizing that they had only ever taken advantage of him.[2]
Notes
- Pa Kent was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, first appearing in Superman #1. However, the Earth 3 version of Pa Kent first appeared in Justice League (Volume 2) #24 by Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis.
