Jonni Thunder is a female private detective who first appeared in a four issue miniseries in 1985 named Jonni Thunder AKA Thunderbolt, written by Roy Thomas. A small gold statue gives her the power to turn into a human thunderbolt, while leaving her body behind. In later issues of Infinity, Inc., the thunderbolt is revealed to be a hostile alien energy-being, who is defeated by being reimprisoned in the statue, leaving Jonni without powers. Jonni existed on Earth-Two before Crisis on Infinite Earths and is briefly seen on the merged Earth resulting from Crisis, attending a detectives convention.

She and her father, Jim Thunder, started the "J. Thunder Detective Agency" in Los Angeles, California years after he was let go from the police force, apparently because he wouldn't take bribes. He died from his own vices or as Jonni describes it "An animal attack ... too many Camels [cigarettes], too much Wild Turkey [whiskey]." Shortly after his funeral, Jonni returns to their office to find a man who been waiting for her but is instead deceased. An investigation ensues and Jonni eventually returns to her office to face off against a robotic bug, which she whacks with a lamp. Though the police don't believe her, she tells them of her ordeal anyway. Later, she meets up with Clarence "Slim" Chance, who is an old friend of her father. He tells Jonni the story of a statue her father possesses, which was found in a South American country and given to Jim by a man he himself had put in jail. Chance is willing to pay her $100,000 for the statue. She retrieves the statue from a repair shop where it was because it had been a part of the lamp she used to stop the robot. Taking the statue to the meeting place, Jonni is instead accosted by a man and inadvertently releases the energy of the statue, becoming Thunderbolt!
