Josef Osterman was the father of Doctor Jon Osterman, and the husband of Inge Osterman. He was a German-American watchmaker who pushed his son into a career in nuclear physics in place of watchmaking after the atomic bomb decimated Hiroshima. This invariably lead to the accident that transformed Jon into the nigh-omnipotent being known as Doctor Manhattan. However, Josef was never told his son survived said accident, and died miserable. "Jon Osterman's father" was created by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, and first appeared in Watchmen #4 (1986). Josef Osterman was given his name and backstory by J. Michael Straczynski and Adam Hughes in Before Watchmen: Doctor Manhattan" #3 (2013).
