Since the murder of my parents by dastardly criminals, violence has been anathema to me.

Joe Chill was the criminal who killed Bruce Wayne's parents.

One night, Thomas and Martha Wayne took their young son Bruce to the Monarch Theater where a Zorro film was currently playing.[1] After the movie, the Wayne family had to walk through a dark alleyway on the way to their car and were suddenly confronted by Joe Chill.[2][3] The criminal then proceeded to shoot and kill the Waynes in front of Bruce.[4]

After he witnessed the deaths of his parents, Bruce Wayne grew up to consider violence an anathema to him.[5] As an adult, he eventually adopted the identity of Batman and dedicated his entire life to crime-fighting.[6]

Years later, Batman was sprayed with Fear Toxin by Scarecrow, which caused him to have a hallucination of the night his parents were murdered.[2]

Batman once also had a flashback of that night when Doctor Hugo Strange tried to hypnotize him at the T.H.R.U.S.H. Undersea Base in Monaco.[3]

  • This version of the character is exclusive to the continuity of the television series Batman, its tie-in comic book series, related live-action movie and animated movies, Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders and Batman vs. Two-Face. It is an adaptation of Joe Chill. The original character was created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane and first appeared in Detective Comics #33.
  • The murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne was only rarely alluded to in the original Batman television series and the motives of their killer were never revealed. In the episodes "Hi Diddle Riddle" and "The Joker's Epitaph", Bruce mentioned that his parents were killed by "dastardly criminals", but did not give any further details about the exact circumstances of this event. Much later, Joe Chill appeared in the Batman '66 comic series as the Wayne killer. However, more than one person was responsible for the Waynes' death according to the original TV series, which would indicate that Joe Chill served as a hitman who presumably assassinated them on someone else's orders.
