Two years. Two years I was trapped in the ground. In that blackness. I couldn't see. I couldn't feel. But I could still hate.

Joseph Monteleone was a career criminal working in Central City before the particle accelerator incident that gave some of the city's residents super powers.
History
On the night of the incident, Monteleone was being interrogated at a tar factory by some of his former gang members about money he had hidden from them. After telling them where the money was, the two criminals double crossed him and dropped Monteleone into a vat of tar, suspecting it would kill him. However, with dark matter in the air from the particle accelerator, Monteloeone survived and gained the power to turn into a tar monster. The tar vat that he fell into, though, was put into the ground before he had a chance to escape.
Two years later, after being totally conscious the whole time, Monteleone was freed when construction workers dug up the site he was buried. Vengeful of the gang members who had done this to him, Monteleone hunted them down, successfully killing one at his place of work.
After two attempts on the second gang member's life at a street race, the Flash finally apprehended "Tar Pit" after setting a trap for him and then ambushing with freeze grenades. Monteleone was then quickly apprehended.[1]
