Synopsis for "Bomb"

Brainiac is destroying Metropolis with an immense, red energy field that threatens to wipe out the United States. The Federal government, presently under President Amanda Waller's leadership, is unable to contact Superman. Instead, Doctor Sivana recommends that President Waller order a nuclear strike on the city. Sivana muses out loud that it is ironic that the government needs Superman's help in destroying Brainiac, who was originally created by the government to act as a countermeasure to Superman himself. Waller reluctantly orders the nuclear strike but before the bomb is dropped, Superman intercepts the bomber. He scratches words on his cockpit window demanding 5 minutes to stop Brainiac himself. Superman flies to the city and struggles against extreme forces and wind generated by the field as he walks towards it.

After going inside the energy field, Superman finds Brainiac is a small, cybernetic child, damaged and distraught. He does not know who he is and explains that he fled from someone before finally admitting he cannot control his powers. Superman then explains how he learned to control his powers when he was a small child and now he must do the same, by focusing. Unfortunately, the sobbing child finds himself unable to concentrate, causing Superman to believe that he must kill the child to stop him before it's too late. The child comes to the same conclusion and pleads for Superman to simply "do it." Superman uses a single, swift blast of his heat vision to end Brainiac's life and the energy field dissipates. Superman lets out a sigh of relief, but is profoundly saddened by what he had to do.
