A Knight of Shadows, Part I is an episode of season 1 of Justice League. It premiered on September 20, 2002.

Synopsis for "A Knight of Shadows, Part I"

In Arthurian England, Camelot is under siege by the forces of the sorceress Morgaine Le Faye. One of Camelot's defenders, Jason Blood, betrays his kingdom by opening the castle's gates to Morgaine's forces. Jason's betrayal is due to his misguided love with Morgaine, but only to be betray by her who gives him a poisonous kiss. As Jason lays dying, Merlin appears before him and admonish him for his actions that has doomed Camelot. Merlin then punish Jason by placing a curse on him by bonding him to the demon Etrigan, forcing him to hunt down Morgaine throughout time.

By the modern day, Batman is investigating a break in at a rare book shop. He is then met by Jason, who informs him that this is the work of Morgaine, who is searching for the fabled Philosopher's Stone, that Merlin hid from her. Possessing the stone would grant her ultimate power to rule the world. Batman Jason tracks Morgaine and her son Mordred to Castle Branek in Britain, where the Stone is believed to be located. Morgaine animates suits of armor to attack them. Jason transforms into Etrigan and he and Batman fights off the enchanted armors, but Morgaine and Mordred have escaped as the Stone is long gone.

Batman and Etrigan meets with the Justice League for their help in finding Morgaine. J'onn J'onzz tries to telepathically locate Morgaine. However, Morgaine seizes J'onn's mind and induce into an illusion where he is back on Mars and reunited with his family. Etrigan breaks into the illusion and frees J'onn. The League and Etrigan decide to find the Philosopher's Stone before Morgaine. Both the League and Morgaine soon learns that the whereabouts of the Stone to archaeologists Henry Moss and Harv Hickman who excavated Castle Branek years ago.

Wonder Woman and Flash goes to Hickman's residence, where a extravagant costume party is being thrown by the now wealthy archaeologist. The two have a difficult time in convincing Hickman's guards to letting them in, but Hickman takes an interest in Wonder Woman and invites her in.

Meanwhile, Batman, Etrigan, and J'onn tracks Henry Moss, who now teaches at a university. On the way, Etrigan warns Batman that J'onn cannot be trusted on the basis that he may have been tempted by Morgaine. Upon reaching Moss, Etrigan brazenly confronted the elderly Moss and indirectly causing him to have a heart attack. Batman checks on Moss and is fortunately able to treat him. Unable to question Moss about the Stone, the three set up a trap for Morgaine by having J'onn disguised as Moss. But Morgaine induce J'onn another illusion of his family, causing him to hesitate and giving her an opening in seriously harming Batman and escaping again.
