Synopsis for "In Blackest Night, Part II"
The Justice League tries to help John Stewart's trial to prove that he is innocent. Superman and J'onn goes to investigate the remains of Ajuris-4. Flash act as John's lawyer, despite being warned by the judges that he will also shared the same penalty as John's if his defendant is accused, meaning that he will be executed along with John (according to one of the judges this is how they solved with their "lawyer problem"). Hawkgirl confronts the five members of the Green Lanterns, who were very dismissive of John at the trial, at a bar over turning their backs on John. When the Lanterns becomes more dismissive and blatantly called John a disgrace to the Corps, Hawkgirl, angrily, fights them and defeat all four of them. Lantern Kilowog, who didn't participate in the fight and doesn't believed John to be a disgrace, is shamed by Hawkgirl's assessment and decide to help John. Hawkgirl then notice a suspicious looking Kanjar Ro and began to follow him.
Meanwhile, Superman and J'onn arrive at the remains of Ajuris-4. They notice the planet's moon is unaffected given that it should have remove itself from Ajuris-4's orbit when the planet was destroyed. The two investigate the moon and finding a cavern containing a massive holographic generator. They are then attack by Kanjar Ro, who had followed them, but he is subdued by Hawkgirl. It turns out that Ajuris-4 wasn't destroyed and that it was made to look like it was by the generator. John was being framed.
At the trial, the Guardians of the Universe have decide to intervene and support John. Regardless of the Guardians and Kilowog defending John, the judges pronounced John as guilty and sentenced him and Flash to a gas chamber. Fortunately, Superman and J'onn arrives with Kanjar Ro in tow and stops the execution. On Superman's order, Hawkgirl destroys the generator and unveiling the illusion, showing Ajuris-4 fully intact. Kanjar Ro confesses that he was paid by the Manhunters to carry out a large distraction for having the Guardians to be away from Oa in order for the Manhunters to attack the planet. It is reveal by the Guardians that they created the Manhunters as a police force prior to the Green Lantern Corps, but had reprogrammed to doing mundane tasks when they were unable to distinguish between right and wrong. Now, the vengeful Manhunters are plotting to regain back their power.
The League and the Green Lantern Corps travel to Oa where it is currently under attack by the Manhunters. The lead Manhunter manages to bypass the planet's defenses and absorbs the power of the Central Power Battery, shedding his metallic form and growing to immense size. John confronts the Manhunter, reciting the Lantern Oath, and channeling the energy of the battery, and by extension the Manhunter, into his ring. He then cleanse the tainted influence from the Manhunter and restoring the Central Power Battery. The Manhunters are defeated and John regains his honor.
Appearing in "In Blackest Night, Part II"
- Justice League
- No notes.
- During the trial, the Flash says the liner "If the ring wasn't lit, you must acquit!" This is a parody of attorney Johnnie Cochran's infamous phrase "If it doesn't fit, you must acquit" used in the O.J. Simpson trial. Cochran's phrase was also previously parodied in The New Batman Adventures episodes "Joker's Millions" and "Over The Edge".
- When Hawkgirl prepares to attack the Green Lanterns in the bar, an alien yells out "No Weapons, no weapons!", which is a reference the line "No Blasters, no blasters!" from the Bar Scene from "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope."
