Synopsis for "Justice League Unlimited/World's Finest Crossover, Chapter Five: Rise of Gorilla God"

Using energy stolen from Air Wave, the Legion of Doom has invaded the Watchtower. Caught off-guard, the heroes deduce that the attackers are younger villains with no knowledge of the future. The villains start shooting the heroes with the energy weapons provided to him by Gorilla Grodd and the energy released by the weapons send the heroes to different stages of the Earth's past and Grodd has set up time barriers to prevent them from escaping. Even the Rock of Eternity and the Speed Force are can't be used under those circumstances.

Grodd has successfully removed most the Justice League's heavy hitters and only Elongated Man is left standing. He tries to reach for a rifle to shoot Grodd and his lackeys, but Lex catches up to what he is doing and breaks the gun apart. Sinestro proceeds to torture Elongated Man while Grodd and the rest of the Legion continue their plans. Grodd brings the Legion to the Watchtower's observation deck, where he shows his allies the Omega Rift, the place in which Darkseid died and caused multiple rifts to open across the timestream.

Grodd believes that by using a fragment of Apokolips, the Legion can harness the Omega Rift's power. As usual, Lex tries to betray Grodd and take the power of the rift for himself, but Grodd had already known that Lex would betray him and the fragment of Apokolips is just a simple rock. What Grodd needed to control the rift was a powerful specimen like himself.

As Hal Jordan tries to defend Thunderlord from a tribe of Neanderthals, he gets a broken transmission from his ring. Other Leagues like Wally West and Firestorm start getting the same message. It's Air Wave and he's been trying to contact them ever since Grodd disintegrated him. He apologizes for having fallen for Grodd's lies and promises to make things right. Ryan Choi deduces that the Legion didn't actually kill Air Wave. They merely stole his power so they could push the Justice League through the timestream.

Air Wave tries to return the Justice League to the present but the scattered energy is too vast for him to control. The other Leaguers lend their power to him, but Air Wave suddenly senses Grodd trying to control the Omega Rift's power. The two different energies collide and the Watchtower is hit by an explosion, from which Grodd emerges with the Omega symbol carved into his chest. Hope is not lost, however, as Air Wave has been resurrected and he brings heroes from different timelines to assist him.

Notes

  • The crossover event We Are Yesterday continues from Batman/Superman: World's Finest #39 and is concluded in Justice League Unlimited (Volume 2) #8.
  • The present-day events of the previous story issue, Batman/Superman: World's Finest #39, take place at the same time as this issue:
    • The present-day Batman and Superman swapped time periods with their "World's Finest" era selves just as the Legion of Doom attacked in the previous story issue. This leads to the Legion of Doom not encountering them on the Watchtower in this issue, due to their past selves appearing in Metropolis.
    • Sinestro, Scarecrow, Joker, and Black Manta briefly leave the Watchtower this issue to find and deal with Batman, Superman, and the other remaining heroes. It is during that period that the confrontation with the "World's Finest" era Batman and Superman, seen in the previous story issue, takes place.
  • According to this story, the Post-Flashpoint iteration of Ace Arn's future is set in the 23rd Century, instead of 22nd Century, as it was before the Flashpoint.[1]

Trivia

  • Air Wave’s Tachyon form and his pose mirror the iconic stance of Doctor Manhattan from both Watchmen and Doomsday Clock. Curiously, tachyons were actually Doctor Manhattan's only weakness.
  • Lex Luthor's past self saying that "he'd never trust a God who wasn't him" is a reference to the events of Justice League (Volume 4), in which his older self became a follower of Perpetua, the Mother of the Multiverse.
    • Moments later, Luthor is struck in the head by an explosive disguised as a rock. This is also a nod to the events of Justice League (Volume 4) #1, where Luthor smashed Vandal Savage’s head with the Cosmic Doorknob.
