Justice League of America #232 is an issue of the series Justice League of America (Volume 1) with a cover date of November, 1984.
Synopsis for "Battlegrounds!"
Dr. Fate buries the eldritch energy of the remains of the Commander's armies under the Pentagon by a mystic spell, while the Monitor and Lyla observe the Commander, who senses them watching. When Superman, Starman, and Flash arrive on Earth-Two with Dr. Mid-Nite and Joshua Champion, they immediately attack Supergirl, Dr. Fate, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern.
Dr. Mid-Nite explains why, and the unaffected heroes can see their teammates struggling mentally with the dominating forces even as they fight them. The Commander reinhabits Champion's body while the JSA and JLA passively resist their friends, until Wonder Woman encircles them with her lasso, and commands them to stop. Ian, Victoria, and Meredith Champion join together to try to force the enemy from Joshua's body, and with the help of the wills of the heroes as well he is freed—only to combine with the buried eldritch energies, and become even more powerful.
The Commander then reveals his past and his intentions. He had been the ruler of his entire universe, and now wields the psychic energy of every creature in that dimension. He had run out of challenges until Champion had appeared and revealed the presence of parallel universes to him. He has vowed to conquer this one and then move on to the others. Their battle seems futile until Champion determines that sending him back to his home dimension would defeat him, and using the teleportation powers of the family and Dr. Fate's magic, a door to it is opened. The heroes are not able to force the enemy through until the Monitor unintentionally distracts him.
The resulting force from the Commander's exile sends the heroes careening through parallel universes; they finally stop where the Crime Syndicate had been imprisoned years before.
While the heroes return to their own Earths, the Champions leave on a dimension-hopping vacation to rekindle their family spirit. Superman, Wonder Woman, and the Flash have no idea of the changes to the Justice League during their absences from Earth-One.
