Justice League of America #68 is an issue of the series Justice League of America (Volume 1) with a cover date of December, 1968.

Synopsis for "Neverwas...the Chaos-Maker!"

In the ancient past there was once an gigantic amoeba type creature named Neverwas, and all it ever wanted was to live in peace and have fun. Being constantly chased and hunted by various prehistoric creatures, Neverwas would seek refuge by using a previously-unknown ability to travel forward in time. The creature would materialize on modern day Earth.

Its appearance terrorizing people, Neverwas is spotted by Hawkman who attacks the creature and finds himself easily defeated before the creature can escape. Realizing the threat is too much for even himself, Hawkman travels to JLA headquarters where he finds Superman, Batman, Green Lantern and Green Arrow and they all agree to go after Neverwas. Superman finds the creature first as it is transporting an entire hotel into a time portal. Chasing after it, Superman finds himself in the distant past during a time when Earth's sun was red instead of yellow making him powerless and trapping him and the people in the hotel in the past.

The creature then travels into the ocean where it is attacked by Aquaman who was warned of its threat. During the fight the creature splits into two different beings that bury the undersea monarch in the rocks, Aquaman then calls out to his undersea friends to free him. The JLA then reunite near the ocean to fight one of the Neverwas-Two, the original has returned to the city where it has opened another time portal.

As the JLA fight Neverwas-Two in the ocean, it tries to turn the tide of battle by splitting into multiple forms and opens a rift in time and space. Meanwhile, in the distant past Superman sees the time portal open and uses it to travel back to the present. With his powers restored, Superman gathers up all the components of Neverwas and tosses it back into the portal. Green Lantern then uses his power ring to bring the hotel back to Earth. Superman realizes that the creature is child like and builds it a giant toy and tosses it through the time portal so that it would have something to play with in its own time. The portal then closes sealing Neverwas back in the past.
