I will make waste of your souls when I crawl inside your bodies, and use your power to rip this world apart. I will turn the minds of your strongest heroes... If I got my claws into your Superman, I'd squeeze you into paste. Can you imagine? Each of his fingers ripping through your membranes, liquifying you without any care or reason. That is your punishment if you do not obey my command. You know I am not lying because Eclipso does not need to lie. Eclipso wants his freedom. That is all he wants.
- — Eclipso src
Galid was a Fallen Angel who was turned by Michael the Archangel into the embodiment of God's Wrath. After being stripped of his rank by his successor, Aztar, Galid took many bodies and hosts over the eons, eventually bounding himself to the Gemworld Lord, Kaala, until his spirit was imprisoned in the magical Black Diamond by Darkseid. In modern days, Galid is commonly known as Eclipso and has become one of the most dangerous enemies of the Justice League.
History
Origin
Eons ago, the being that would become known as Eclipso, was an Angel of Heaven known as Galid. He would eventually join Lucifer's rebellion and became a Fallen Angel.[5] Some time after Galid's fall, the cosmic balance became fractured, as Hecate - goddess of Magic, had sealed away her own dark half, leaving her near unlimited power unchecked. To counter this imbalance, Galid was then turned by Michael the Archangel, into the embodiment of God's Wrath, to craft a dark mirror of Hecate's power - a spirit of vengeance who despised all magic. Thus, his rebirth served not only as punishment, but as a contingency: a living weapon forged to oppose Hecate should she ever threaten the cosmic order. Eclipso served as Heaven's Spirit of Wrath until he eventually overstepped his boundaries and was stripped of his rank by his successor, Aztar.[5][6]
The gravity well formed by Galid's fall from grace created the Shadowlands, a void realm of darkness shaped by his own mind and hatred. After his exile from Heaven, he would spend eons in formless exile in this realm, until his spirit was drawn to the Black Diamond on Apokolips, where Darkseid used the gem to restore Eclipso to form, now carrying the gem within him. Darkseid stated that it was his will for Eclipso to go forth and wreak havoc across creation, and to never forget that Darkseid saved him, and can also end him.[7]
Eclipso causes the Great Deluge
After being reforged, Eclipso began his wave of carnage across the universe, including causing the Biblical Great Flood, known as the Great Deluge that nearly destroyed most of Earth's surface including Atlantis, causing it to sink.[5]
Eclipso eventually returned to Apokolips and knelt before Darkseid's throne, recounting his cosmic atrocities. He had flayed galaxies, drowned civilizations, and committed innumerable acts of destruction in Darkseid's name. Yet despite this devastation, Darkseid remained silent, offering no command, no praise, and no reward. Desperate for validation, Eclipso begged to know if he had made his master proud. In response, Darkseid spat, refusing even to face Eclipso, keeping his back turned and denying him the dignity of acknowledgment.[7]
New-52
Millennia later, in the world of Nilaa, the Lord of House Onyx formed a blood pairing with the Lady of House Diamond. The result of their union was a child named Kaala. The dormant powers of both houses twisted his evil soul, and the being that would become known as Eclipso was reborn inside him. When he became a man, he killed his parents and received both of their blood power utilizing a Black Diamond. By both having been born on an eclipse and gaining his powers during one, Kaala was tied to the darkness of a total solar eclipse.[8]
During the eclipse, his power was magnified tenfold, and his evil was so great that the other Houses banded together against him in the War of the Eclipse. Thanks to the fact that he could not enslave those who bore the blood-power of their Houses, Lady Chandra of House Amethyst was able to defeat him by opening a portal and dragging him to First Home, where he was trapped in the Black Diamond for centuries.[9]
Lady Chandra had hoped to destroy him there, but she failed, and the black diamond survived with the essence of Lord Kaala inside it until he could find a physical host.[8]
Antiquity
The diamond ended up in Hell. In the early 11th century AD, it was taken to Earth by the Amazon Exoristos, who found that she grew more violent with it in her possession.[10] She left it with Al Jabr in the Moorish city of Al-Wadi, where by 1043 Lord Kaala's influence had turned a once proud city into a place of crime and corruption.[11] Following the discovery of the Holy Grail by the Demon Knights in a giants' stronghold it was used to balance the effects of the diamond.[12]
Eventually, the stone was discovered by Dr. Henry Jekyll, who used it to create the formula that would transform him into Mr. Hyde, a monster consumed by the rage and power of Lord Kaala.[13]
Team 7
Nearly a century later, the Diamond had been housed on Sentinel Island, where it was protected by the ghosts of all of those who died there. It was discovered there by Team 7, who, to counter a plan by Basilisk to use the Black Diamond's power against metahumans, retrieved it. In the process, Slade Wilson became possessed by the spirit in the Diamond. After he was freed, the stone was hidden away in the Black Room.[14]
Black Diamond Probability
Years later, Catwoman was contracted to infiltrate the Black Room and steal the Black Diamond, nearly becoming possessed herself. After retrieving it safely, it was delivered to Alex Montez, who became completely possessed by Eclipso.[15]
John Constantine, who had stolen a portal crystal to Nilaa when Princess Amaya returned there[16], knew that Eclipso posed a threat to the earth, and decided to use the favour Amaya owed him (in exchange for having bought her pizza) to get Eclipso back to Nilaa, and off of Earth. Upon his return to Nilaa, Eclipso introduced himself as Lord Kaala and murdered Lady Senshe of House Citrine before beginning his quest to regain control of Nilaa.[9]
His first move was to return to House Onyx to take control of his people there, though he failed to kill the current House's Lady Akikra. Taking her people with him, he then went to House Diamond, where he offered Lord Reishan the opportunity to surrender freely to him. The Lord refused, and was immediately beheaded, causing the blood power of his House to transfer into his son Zushan. Wilier than his father and brother, Zushan surrendered and turned on his brother Hadran, who was saved at the last by Lady Akikra.
With the combined Houses of Onyx and Diamond under his command, Kaala led his attack against House Amethyst, requiring that the disparate factions within that House unite against him.[8]
DC Rebirth
Maxwell Lord, under Eclipso's influence, used his powers to seize control of much of the Justice League and the world. Eclipso fully revealed himself when he was confronted by Batman and the Suicide Squad at the White House.[17] He was eventually defeated when Killer Frost, aided by the Suicide Squad and the temporarily liberated Justice League members, focused enough refracted sunlight to overpower him.[18]
Later, Eclipso possessed Starbreaker[19] and tried to use Gemworld's core to boost his power and take control of the universe.[20] He seized control of Justice League Dark when they intervened,[21] but was ultimately defeated by Wally West, who was divinely protected from his influence.[22]
Bruce Gordon
Eclipso harnesses the power of the Golden Diamond
Eclipso took Doctor Bruce Gordon as his host, seizing control of him and wreaking havoc in the event of an eclipse.[23] After run-ins with foes such as the Green Lantern Corps[24] and Superman,[25] Eclipso was eventually exorcised from Gordon and imprisoned within the Black Diamond aboard the Justice League's orbital satellite. He left a solar-powered Golden Diamond, linked to his black one, on Earth for Gordon, however, and by magically disguising it as a component of Gordon's "Solar City," was able to manipulate the doctor into energizing it, at once possessing Gordon— in broad daylight— and freeing himself on board the satellite. When the Justice League gathered there the next day to observe a total solar eclipse, Eclipso struck, dominating the Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Black Canary, and the Atom and turning them against their teammates. While they fought, the Leaguer Red Tornado, immune to his influence as an artificial being, confronted Eclipso, as did Batman and Superman. Eclipso stood against them all; however, from Earth, Gordon destroyed the satellite with a beam of light.[23]
Once his initial rage at his imprisonment had passed, however, Eclipso decided to keep the heroes alive as his tools: he focused his control on Batman and Superman, using the former's extensive knowledge and the latter's great power to target the Earth's telecommunications satellites and drive its people into chaos, while he held the rest of the League prisoner in a giant Black Diamond in the Sahara Desert as bait in a trap for the other heroes of the world. Eclipso joined the Golden Diamond-possessed Bruce Gordon, whom he dubbed Lumos, Prince of Light, in the Solar City, and sent Batman and Superman to lay waste to Gotham Cityand the satellites in orbit. The heroes of the Justice Society of America, however, freed the Leaguers from the demon's control and captivity, and with them confronted Eclipso and Lumos, only to be transformed into crystal by the power of their diamonds.[26]
Eclipso and Lumos disabled the United States of America's satellite network from a control center in Greenland, but were intercepted by Batman, Superman, and Batman's sidekick Robin, who had restored the crystallized heroes. While his enemies were occupied by the eclipsed facility staff, Eclipso made contact with several members of the Justice Society, and by planting insecurities over being mocked and replaced in their minds, turned them against their Justice League allies. When the Spectre intervened against the demon, however, the Justice Society freed themselves, and Batman and Doctor Fate worked together to teleport Eclipso into Lumos' firing line, causing the Black and Golden Diamonds to strike each other, stunning them both and shattering the stones. Superman compressed and reformed the Black Diamond, into which he and Fate sealed Eclipso once more. To ensure the demon's captivity, the Spectre placed the diamond in orbit around the sun, bathed in perpetual light.[27]
Infinite Frontier
The Great Darkness eventually took control of Eclipso's mind, alongside many other cosmic forces of evil who had sought its power.[28]
The Darkness' forces invaded the Multiverse, and Justice Incarnate and the Justice League of Earth 0 tracked the origin point of the invasion to the ruins of the pre-Crisis Multiverse. Doctor Multiverse teleported the teams to Multiverse-2, where Pariah was modifying his antimatter chamber from the first Crisis to allow the Darkness to enter reality.
The heroes attempted to reason with Pariah, but he refused to listen and summoned Eclipso and the other possessed villains. However, Green Arrow was able to destroy the chamber, cutting the Darkness' link to reality and causing Eclipso and the rest of the Darkness' forces to dissipate.[29]
Eclipso and the rest of the Dark Army later invaded Earth 0.[30] The heroes managed to banish Pariah to a pocket universe, but Eclipso and the others remained possessed as the corrupted Darkness transferred to Deathstroke.[31] Black Adam used his lightning again to purge the Darkness from Deathstroke, freeing Eclipso and the other possessed villains.[32]

The New Golden Age
Amanda Waller sent the heroes Wildcat and Doctor Mid-Nite against Eclipso[33]in the South American jungles of Parador,[34] where he slaughtered them both. Later, Eclipso joined forces with the time-traveling sorcerer Mordru,[35] and possessed the insane Jean Loring.[33]
Eclipso possesses Wildcat
When his one-time victim Yolanda Montez was resurrected from the dead, Eclipso took root in her soul,[35] kept in check with life-giving Lazarus pills[36] while growing stronger on the occasion of an eclipse.[37] Eclipso drove Montez to seek revenge against Waller for her role in the mission that caused her death, and used his influence to stoke tension between Montez's Justice Society allies and the Legion of Super-Heroes, heroes of the 31st Century, into a full-blown brawl. When his manipulation was revealed by the JSA's Doctor Fate and the Legion of Substitute Heroes, Eclipso emerged from Montez's body and took full control over most of the gathered heroes. The Huntress and Legionnaire of the JSA escaped his possession, however, and sealed the demon back into his Black Diamond by striking it with a crossbow bolt magically imbued with the energy of Solaris the Tyrant Sun. Eclipso's power over the heroes was broken, and Yolanda Montez was restored to herself, while the Legionnaire proposed to return the diamond to its native Gemworld.[35]
All In
Some time during the Amanda Waller's hostile takeover of Earth, Eclipso was able to capture Jim Corrigan and trap him away, along with the Spectre, on the Dark Side of the Moon. A few days after the defeat of Amanda Waller, a furious Darkseid, who had been rampaging across the Sphere of the Gods for weeks, came to the Moon, knowing that Eclipso possessed the Spectre. He tried to tempt the New God by continuing with their chess game before using his powers to take control of Darkseid. However, he had anticipated this, opening a Boom Tube on top of him: a massive wave of solar energy from the Dog Star exorcised Eclipso, banishing him once again inside the Heart of Darkness, which was seemingly left on the Moon.[38]
War of the Moon
Eclipso in his Heliophage form
Eclipso eventually ascended into his final "Heliophage" form after absorbing Foxy, a Speed Force entity, dramatically amplifying his power. His ultimate goal was to ascent to Darkseid's throne and achieve Heliosynchronicity - a metaphysical alignment of the moon's orbit with solar flares that would trigger an endless eclipse, plunging Earth into a permanent nightmare of darkness, violence, and despair. To realize this vision, Eclipso summoned and endowed the Rogues with superspeed and immense power, transforming them into elite enforcers of his divine wrath. They constructed massive energy engines on the lunar surface to shift the moon's trajectory. Hidden behind a plasma vortex at the moon's south pole, The Flash responded with an army of temporal clones, who generated a Velocisphere to maintain a speed advantage. These clones, created from raw Speed Force energy, sacrificed themselves in explosive charges to destroy Eclipso's constructs. The war raged for years in speed time, with the Flash Family fighting to prevent Eclipso from reaching Heliosynchronicity.[39][40]

Powers and Abilities
Powers
- Spirit of Wrath: Eclipso is a primordial spirit of divine wrath, composed of dark, magical energy. His essence was originally Galid, God's Spirit of Wrath, but after abusing his mandate, he was stripped of that rank and exiled from Heaven for eons until his formless spirit was drawn to the Black Diamond on Apokolips, where Darkseid bound the gem to his essence, reforging him into the vengeful force known as Eclipso.[7] However, it is possible for Eclipso to be trapped inside the gem, due to his tether to it. When trapped, Eclipso needs a host to cut themselves with the diamond, in order for him to be freed and possess their body.[41]
- Magic: Eclipso is among the most powerful magical forces in creation, possessing magic every bit as strong as The Spectre's[42]. Eclipso has also utilized magic to toy with The Flash, claiming that he could unbind his atoms or untie his story from the core narrative to retcon him as an agonized ball of gristle.[43] Eclipso was also able to remove The Shade's immortality, with the snap of his fingers.[39]
- Darkness Manipulation: Eclipso's power over darkness stems from his intrinsic link to the Shadowlands - a metaphysical realm that is, in essence, his externalized mind and a living extension of Eclipso's consciousness, allowing him to weaponize darkness as both a physical and emotional force. Through this connection, Eclipso can generate constructs, shrouds, and tendrils of pure shadow, and corrupt the minds of others by amplifying their negative emotions. In the Shadowlands, Eclipso can see and speak through the realm itself, such as the sky.[39][20]
- Darkness Constructs: Eclipso can create shadowy tendrils made of the darkness that he commands, allowing him to hold and constrict victims.[44] He was also capable of surrounding the entirety of Central City in a dome of darkness, which caused everyone to experience negative emotions.[20]
- Fatal Touch: Eclipso can also use this power over darkness to drain life-force from his victims, turning them into a husk in seconds.[44]
- Dimensional Travel: Eclipso can enter and exit the Shadowlands at will.[39]
- Elemental Control: Eclipso has absolute control over the elements. He was capable of causing destructive floods and hurricanes which would become known as the "Great Deluge", and destroyed most of Earth's surface including Atlantis.[5]
- Weather Manipulation: Eclipso can control the weather and cause rain.[45]
- Hydrokinesis: Eclipso can manipulate water and was able to turn Aqualad's Waterbearers against him.[45]
- Eldritch Blast: Eclipso can project blasts of pure dark energy from the Heart of Darkness in his chest. These blasts are strong enough to disorient the whole of the Justice League and Suicide Squad with a single pulse of energy.[18]
- Enhanced Senses: As a primordial spirit, Eclipso's senses are far greater than any human. He is even capable of smelling magic.[41]
- Illusion Casting: Eclipso can cast illusions to disguise objects as something else, in order to fool and manipulate others.[23]
- Immortality: As a divine spirit of wrath, Eclipso does not physically age and cannot be killed by any ordinary means. If he is destroyed however, his spirit be sent back into the Black Diamond.
- Invulnerability: Eclipso was completely unfazed by a barrage of bullets fired by Deadshot.[18]
- Metamorphosis: Eclipso can alter his form at will, once taking on the shape of a lioness.[39]
- Possession: Eclipso is capable of possessing multiple bodies at once, having once possessed the entire Justice League Dark.[21] He is able to conjure his almost unlimited power through this host bodies, as well as any unique powers they many have. This possession is the main way in which Eclipso can escape the diamond he is tethered to.[17]
- Superhuman Strength: Eclipso has enough physical strength to make Superman bleed with his blows.[46]
- Telekinesis: Eclipso has incredibly strong telekinetic powers. During his stint in the body of Maxwell Lord, Eclipso moved the Earth's moon in the way of the sun with ease. He did this to create an eclipse so he couldn't be harmed by the sun's rays.[17] While on the moon where his powers are most potent, his telekinesis was powerful enough to easily deflect multiple of Darkseid's Omega Beams and simultaneously sink him into the moon's surface.[38] He was also able to move the moon to block the sun.[17]
- Telekinetic Flight: Using the telekinetic force he commands, Eclipso is able to levitate himself into the air. Eclipso often chooses to fly instead of walk, as he sees it as more regal and intimidating.[18]
- Telepathy: Eclipso is able to read anybody's mind to find out anything about them. No secret however dark it happens to be is safe from Eclipso. He often uses his telepathy to learn who a person is and what motivates them.[18]
- Emotion Control: Eclipso is able to induce negative and hateful emotions within others through a variety of means. He is able to cause a rain that summoned people's rage and anxiety to the surface,[45] and can do the same with his dark energy.[20]
- Mind Control: Eclipso is able to control the minds of almost every being in existence by unlocking the darkest thoughts within them. When he controls a creature's mind a blue crescent emerges on the right side of their face. His mind controlling abilities are so strong he was able to control the minds of almost everybody on Earth with ease.[17]
- Teleportation: Eclipso is capable of instantly teleporting to any location of his choosing.[27]
- Intangibility: When teleporting, Eclipso momentarily becomes intangible, allowing people or objects to pass right through him.[27]

Paraphernalia
Equipment
- Black Diamond: Also known as the Heart of Darkness, the Black Diamond is an Apokoliptian gem that is tethered to Eclipso, acting as both a prison and a conduit for him. It anchors his essence, channels his power, and enables him to manifest in the material world.[7] Whoever possesses the diamond can potentially wield or awaken Eclipso's corruptive influence, though he remains bound to its core.[41]
Notes
- The New 52 Sword of Sorcery Vol 2 originally introduced Eclipso as Kaala, a corrupted lord of House Onyx from Gemworld, portraying him as a dark conqueror rather than a fallen angel. However, after the All In initiative, Eclipso's origin was shown to include multiple changes that contradict some details in previous depictions, restoring and expanding on his Pre-Flashpoint origin as Galid, the first Spirit of God's Wrath. The Gemworld incarnation of Eclipso became folded into the broader mythos of Eclipso's timeline, treating Kaala as one of the many forms or hosts Eclipso has worn across time. The Shadowlands was also reimagined as the externalized mind of Eclipso and retconned into his origin - his consciousness being too vast for four dimensions, spilling into a realm of living darkness. It was also revealed that Darkseid was now the being who first tethered Eclipso to the Black Diamond.[7]
- Eclipso's species classification is complex. Originally a Fallen Angel who was transformed into a divine Spirit of Wrath. He was eventually stripped of this rank, and became a formless spirit until he was put back into form by the Black Diamond. He has referred to himself as a god,[39] and has been referred to as a "Dark God" and a Demon.[27]
- Eclipso was created by Bob Haney and Lee Elias, first appearing in House of Secrets #61. However, Eclipso first appeared as part of Prime Earth continuity in Team 7 (Volume 2) #2 by Justin Jordan and Julius Gopez.
