Kal is the Superman of Earth-D and leader of the Justice Alliance.

Superman began operating during World War II, which resulted in a narrow Allied victory. Following the horrors of the war, the nations of Earth formed a global government and world peace was achieved; although supervillains, alien invasions and natural disasters ensured a continued need for superheroes. At some point he met Unatti, aka Wonder Woman, the last Amazon. The two fell in love and eventually married.[1]

They and several other heroes banded together to form the Justice Alliance. One day, dimensional disturbances began ravaging the world as people disappeared and were replaced by their counterparts from alternate realities and a vortex of energy formed in the sky above Metropolis. Superman flew closer to investigate and was suddenly transported to Earth-X, a dark and brutal world ruled by the Nazis. He appeared in the secret headquarters of the Freedom Fighters and they attacked him, believing he was an invader. He easily fought them off and was confronted by another Superman, but the two instantly recognised each other's innate goodness and immediately trusted one another and began to talk rather than fight.[2]

The other Superman had been brough to Earth-X from his own world by swapping places with Overman, their counterpart on Earth-X. Previously the dimensional shifts had caused people to switch places with their counterparts in other realities but the Multiverse had begun to break down enough that two versions of the same man were placed in the same universe. The Freedom Fighters believed that the chaos of the moment was the perfect time to topple the Nazi regime, and while the other Superman wanted to focus on saving the Multiverse, Kal decided to save Earth-X and then the Multiverse. The two Supermen and the full strength of the Freedom Fighters attacked the headquarters of the dictator Vandal Savage and managed to defeat and capture him, although the Freedom Fighters' leader General Zod was killed.

Suddenly the assembled heroes were hit by a psychic scream of pain and the Supermen followed it to a basement laboratory where Savage kept his "Oracle", the Earth-X counterpart of Superman's old friend J'onn J'onzz, the Martian Manhunter. Although mad and near dead from Savage's torture, the other Martian had reached out across the thinning dimensional boundaries to call J'onn and the Justice Alliance to Earth-X and was able to pass knowledge of the source of the disturbances to his counterpart before he died. Using this information, they headed to the multiversal nexus known as the Mirrored Room. They briefly stopped off in another reality to pick up the Wonder Woman from the other Superman's world. The other Superman and Wonder Woman were merely good friends and their counterparts' romantic relationship made them uncomfortable.[1]

In the Mirrored Room they found the Justice League unconscious and floating in the void. They revived the League's Green Lantern and he explained that Amazo, a cosmically powerful android from the League's universe, had been trying to break through the walls of the Mirrored Room to reach an entity beyond. The League had managed to convince him to stop but Overman, who had been transported to the League's world and brought along when they too followed the disturbances to their source, had broken the boundaries and released Amazo-II, an alternate version of Amazo who had fused with the Anti-Life Equation and murdered all life in his world. The assembled heroes tried to fight Amazo-II but found it futile with several of them being killed, and the fight itself was revealed to be merely an illusion while they floated helpless in the void.[3]

Superman and the entire Multiverse were destroyed by Amazo-II, but the League's Wonder Woman recreated it with the Life Equation. The Justice Alliance bid farewell to the League and returned home.[4]

Powers

  • Kryptonian Physiology: Superman possesses powers under the effects of a "yellow" sun. These include:
    • Solar Energy Absorption: Under optimal conditions, this is the main source of Superman's super powers as they are contingent upon exposure to solar radiation from a yellow sun star system. His biological make up includes a number of organs which lack analogues in humans and whose functions are unknown. It is believed that between one or more of these and his bio-cellular matrix, "yellow" solar energy is stored for later use. This allows for the use of these powers to fade when yellow solar radiation is not available instead of immediate failure.
    • Super-Hearing: Superman's hearing is sensitive enough to hear any sound at any volume or pitch. With skill and concentration, he can block out ambient sounds to focus on a specific source or frequency.
    • Enhanced Vision: Superman's vision processes the entire electromagnetic spectrum as well as allowing vast control over selective perception and focus. This umbrella ability includes the following:
      • Electromagnetic Spectrum Vision: Superman can see well into most of the electromagnetic spectrum. He can see and identify radio and television signals as well as all other broadcast or transmitted frequencies. Using this ability, he can avoid detection by radar or satellite monitoring methods. This also allows him to see the aura generated by living thing.
      • Telescopic Vision: This is the ability to see something at a great distance, without violating the laws of physics. Though limited, the exact extent of the ability is undetermined. In function, it is similar to the zoom lens on a camera.
      • X-Ray Vision: This is the ability to see through any volume of matter except lead. Supermans can see things behind a solid, opaque object as if it were not there. He can focus this ability to "peel back" layers of an object, allowing hidden image or inner workings to be observed. The exact type of energy perceived—such as x-rays, cosmic rays, or some other energy invisible to normal humans—is unclear. This ability perceives an ambient energy source though, it does not involve the eye projecting a concentrated, possibly toxic, beam to be reflected back from objects.
      • Microscopic Vision: This is the ability to see extremely small objects and images down to the atomic level.
      • Infrared Vision: Superman can see with better acuity in darkness, and to a degree in total darkness.
    • Flight: Superman is able to manipulate graviton particles to defy the forces of gravity and achieve flight. This ranges from hovering to moving in any posture, in any direction.
    • Invulnerability: Due to the interaction of his dense molecular structure and supercharged bio-electric aura, Superman is nigh-invulnerable to extreme energy forces. In addition, his extends this protection against toxins and diseases.
    • Superhuman Stamina: Superman is able to maintain continuous strenuous physical action for an indefinite period of time. This based on his body converting yellow solar radiation directly to energy, but is limited by physiological and psychological needs to eat, drink, and sleep.
    • Superhuman Strength: Superman's strength is augmented by yellow solar radiation interacting with the greater than human density, resilience and biological efficiency of his musculature. His strength is more an act of conscious will on energy fields than actual physical strength. It is this act of conscious will that enables him to perform physical feats that are beyond the mere application force, such as moving a mountain top without said rock crumbling under its own mass.
    • Superhuman Speed: Superman is able to move at incredible speed by sheer force of will. This extends to his perceptions and allows for feats such as catching bullets in mid flight as well as covering vast distances in little or no time. This also confers:
    • Super-Breath: Superman is able to create hurricane force winds by exhaling air from his lungs. He can chill the air as it leaves his lungs to freeze targets. He can also reverse the process to pull large volumes of air or vapor into his lungs.
    • Longevity: Superman can live longer than regular humans, remaining at his prime as long as he was under the exposure of the "yellow" sun.
