Superman, birth name Kal-El and adopted name Clark Kent, is Earth's premiere superhero and a founding member of the Justice League.

History

Origin of the Justice League

Superman was attacked on Earth by a parademon which he defeated, but was then forced into conflict with Green Lantern and Batman, who he accused of working with the parademon since they were in possession of a box-shaped device much like the creature's. Superman was completely unharmed by every attack, device, and weapon Batman threw at him and the arrogance of Green Lantern caused him to grossly underestimate the Man of Steel's power. Angered, he chased the two across Metropolis. Superman tried to intimidate them, but Batman calmly mentioned that "Clark" never kills. Shocked that Batman knew his secret identity, Superman immediately stopped, realizing he wasn't the enemy and used his x-ray vision to identify the Dark Knight as Bruce Wayne. Batman explained that the bomb was likely extraterrestrial in nature, to which Superman agreed, adding that the technology wasn't of Kryptonian origin. Via a sewer system, the three men journeyed to an abandoned building a few blocks away from the Daily Planet, where they analyzed the device. Batman then stated that the suspected bombs were strategically planted and that there was the potential of a full-scale invasion. Green Lantern disregarded the idea, but within moments, the box activated, opening a portal to horde of parademons. The three battled against them furiously until Superman quickly flew off after he overheard an attack on Air Force One.

Superman managed to save the President's craft from a parademon attack by blasting them with his heat vision, while meeting Wonder Woman, who he developed a mutual attraction to.

Along with Wonder Woman, he regrouped with Batman and Green Lantern while also meeting the Flash, Shazam and Cyborg just before the arrival of the invasion's mastermind; Darkseid, ruler of Apokolips. Superman and the gathering of heroes were no match for the despotic tyrant. Superman was knocked unconscious by Darkseid's omega beams and carried away to Apokolips by a parademon.

Desaad began experimenting on Superman, intending to brainwash him into a "super-parademon" until Batman, who infiltrated the room in order to rescue Superman, overpowered Desaad and freed Superman. The cruel experimentation on the Man of Steel blinded him with rage which led to him accidentally killing Desaad and attack Batman, who attempted to talk him down and remind him that the world needed him.

Finally recovering, Superman returned to Earth with Batman and resumed the assault on Darkseid, briefly managing to get the upper hand. When the heroes worked together to force Darkseid and his cohorts back to Apokolips via a wormhole generated by Cyborg, it was Superman who forced the injured dictator through with one final punch. Superman, along with his fellow heroes, were honored at the capitol for their roles in stopping the invasion.

Throne of Atlantis

After the foundation of the Justice League, Superman and Wonder Woman began dating.

Superman joined Wonder Woman overlooking a Greek city, noting that they may not be like the gods they were often compared to, but they were not like the humans they protected. Clark decided to take Diana on a diner for a date to show her the benefits of having a secret identity. Their dinner was interrupted by Lois Lane, Clark's co-worker at the Daily Planet. He introduced Lois to Diana, but the date is interrupted, this time more seriously by Cyborg and Shazam who teleported to their location and requested their presence at headquarters.

The Justice League were investigating the mysterious sinking of the USS California submarine. Examining the raised wreckage, they discovered the enemy was not related to Darkseid but terrestrial warriors. Diana spoke of Atlantis, theorizing the attack could be precursor to war. With Shazam's suggestion, Superman and Batman decided to meet Atlantis-expert Dr. Shin, while the others were tasked in locating Atlantis.

Superman and Batman arrived at Dr. Shin's home to find his work destroyed. Superman was able to recreate a photograph of Arthur Curry, also salvaging a letter from his father revealing that his son is half-Atlantean. Batman instructed the Justice League to converge at Arthur's home, a lighthouse at Mercy Reef. The League found Arthur and his friend, Mera, under attack by the Trench, savage creatures from beneath the sea. Fending off their foes, the Justice League accompanied Arthur and Mera to Atlantis to try and negotiate an end to the hostilities between humans and Atlanteans.

Superman journeyed with Arthur, Mera, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and Cyborg to Atlantis and learned of Queen Atlanna's death. The outsiders were defeated by Ocean Master, Arthur's half-brother, and condemned to be consumed by the monstrous Dark Trench. The heroes defeated the monster and escaped back to the surface. Ocean Master's army was already attacking Metropolis as the League scrambled to intervene. During the confrontation, Superman saved construction worker John Henry Irons from Atlantean soldiers. The battle ended when Arthur wrested the Trident of Neptune from his warmongering brother.

After the battle, Superman and his friends visited Atlantis to witness Arthur's coronation and inducted him into the Justice League as Aquaman. In the celebration, Superman and Wonder Woman expressed their plans to go on a second date.

Justice League Vs. Teen Titans

Superman and his allies have opened their new headquarters, the Hall of Justice. However the Hall was attacked by members of the Legion of Doom, who the league engaged. Superman found himself face to face with Weather Wizard who succumbed to Trigon's control by a corruptor. Because of his vulnerability to magic, Superman was incapable of defeating Weather Wizard, but Robin was able to knock him out with the Batwing. Superman ended up corrupted by the same magic and flew off to an unknown desert.

There, Superman began burrowing into the ground, finding an ancient machine and raised it up. Robin confronted the man of steel, but was unable to defeat him until he stabbed him with a Kryptonite shard. The corruption was purged from Superman, but the Kryptonite shard is still in his body, so he requested Damian to remove it. Sometime later, Superman told Starfire that it was wise of her to call in the Titans, ordering them to rescue their comrade Raven, while he dealt with the corrupted Wonder Woman and Flash. He confronted Flash first, but was unable to catch him, so apologizing for what he was about to do, he snapped Barry's leg to purge him of his possession as well.

He then came face to face with Diana, who was under Trigon's control and got the upper hand after a confrontation when he bound her with the Lasso of Truth. The Lasso's power was able to release her from Trigon's control as well and he held her in his arms after. He was present at the Hall of Justice when the league congratulated the Titans on a job well done.

Justice League Dark

Superman met up with his fellow league members at the Hall of Justice, due to a strange outbreak. It is believed to be of magical origin and he confronts the sorcerer Destiny, before succumbing to a spell causing him to look like a demonic foe to his allies and his fellow allies demonic foes to him. The spell was lifted courtesy of Zatanna upon Destiny's defeat.

The Death of Superman

With very little effort, Superman was able to take down Bruno Manheim and his Intergang thugs from robbing a bank and rescues hostages, including the mayor and his wife. He confiscates Apokoliptian tech they were using and gives it to Cyborg so it can be taken to S.T.A.R Labs. He even gave Lois an exclusive interview, revealing the ship that got him to Earth and the technology with intentions of showing it to the world. He gives Lois a lift back to the Planet, where under his disguise as Clark Kent, agrees for her to meet his parents who are visiting.

He later meets with Cyborg and his dad Silas, along with idolizing fan Dr. John Henry Irons, who Superman saved once. The metal fragments of the tech from Intergang had been analyzed, discovering it is a blend of both Apokoliptian and Earth metals, leading to only one man who could create such a thing: Lex Luthor. Luthor however is under house arrest, but Superman confronts him about the tech. Lex denies any involvement, leaving Superman unconvinced, but left him with the fact that just because he hates Superman, he will never gain the love of Metropolis.

During dinner, Jonathan and Martha Kent reveal things about Clark he kept from Lois, which she finds interesting. Lois' confidence gets her to confront Clark about his past, which he tries to pass off as her knowing him better than anyone else. Lois is undeterred by this, leading to Clark pondering with the notion of revealing his true identity to her. He asks his mother if he should, who despite having regretted raising him on keeping things to himself, pushes Clark to be honest with her.

He finds himself in a training session with Diana, who shares a brief bit of banter about their identities. This also brings up the fact that Diana and Clark have since broken up and his relationship with Lois, like his relationship with Diana, is complicated. She however tells him to open up to Lois, showing her his true self.

While in the Hall of Justice, before his battle with Doomsday, Superman learns Flash is getting married and that his fiancé Iris has known about his heroics as the Flash for years. This causes Superman's concerns about telling Lois to increase. He finally does tell her he is Superman, but before leaving to engage Doomsday, he left a note, telling her he loved her. Superman engaged Doomsday following the monster's battle with Wonder Woman. Holding Diana, she told him to not hold back against the beast, so he engaged him with the full force of his power.

He was beaten down badly, to the extent his body began bleeding. Once within the confines of the Hall of Justice, Both mighty beings decked each other, causing a shockwave powerful enough to bring the entire Hall down on top of them. Lois managed to distract the beast by hurdling rocks towards it, however before any harm could befall her, Superman got up, flew at Doomsday with a sonic boom. His fists collided with his foes face, causing his neck to break, resulting in another powerful sonic boom. Though the beast met his end, Superman was impaled by the monster's spike on his forearm, which killed him.

A funeral was held for Superman, which in attendance was his Justice League allies and even Lex Luthor. Lex gave a eulogy, much to Diana's displeasure and his coffin was placed in a large statue of his family crest. Sometime later however, his coffin was open, revealing no body and witnesses describing someone flying off in a red cape, leaving Lois to believe Superman had returned.

Reign of the Supermen

Following the death and supposed resurrection of Superman, 4 new Supermen have appeared 6 months after Doomsday's attack. The first being Superboy, who was a clone created by Lex Luthor that took on a couple of muggers. Steel was the second, who was Dr. John Henry Irons, one of the scientists at S.T.A.R Labs and one responsible for saving Jimmy Olsen from an oncoming bus. The third was Eradicator, who engaged weapon smugglers. The final being Henk Henshaw, otherwise known as Cyborg Superman, who stopped a missile from South Kasnia from hitting it's North Kasnian neighbors.

Steel managed to locate and infiltrate the Fortress of Solitude, where Superman had undergone a revitalization process with the aid of the Eradicator. After an intense battle between Eradicator and Steel, Superman rose from his ship, telling Eradicator to stop. Wearing his solar suit, possessing long hair and has a five o'clock shadow, Superman explains to Steel the revitalization process and despite the fact he's still alive, he is pretty depowered. Sometime after this, Superman engages in a fight with Cyborg Superman during the launch of the new Justice League Watchtower. Lois aids him the best she can against him, however is injured in the process.

Lois was able to open the Watchtower's sun shields, allowing Superman's cells to saturate with the energy. The boost was enough to give Superman the ability to blast off Hank's prosthetic with his heat vision and then stab the cyborg's brain with a sunstone crystal, containing the Eradicator. Superman had finally returned and was called upon by the league, wearing a new suit.

Batman: Hush

As Ivy was in Metropolis, she somehow got the attention of Superman and utilized a synthetic Kryptonite lipstick to get him under her control. She would use him in an attempt to kill Batman and Catwoman, however resisted the urge before he was kissed again by Ivy. This resulted in a fight between him and Batman in the sewers, where he was initially beaten down via Batman, wearing Kryptonite brass knuckles. The fight led to the streets above, near the Daily Planet, where Superman got the upper hand on Batman.

He soon heard the sounds of Lois Lane yelling for his help. She had been captured by Catwoman in hopes to break him of the mind control. Initially it didn't work and Catwoman tossed off the building, which caused him to snap out of it and save Lois. Though Lois noticed the lipstick, Kal simply said he blacked out for that part and that he'd explain everything later. Superman helped Batman and Catwoman confront Ivy, though Ivy tried to run, Selina was able to knock her out.

Though he made his displeasure of endangering Lois quite clear to Batman, the Dark Knight knew he'd save her. Selina tossed the lipstick to Batman, examining it, indicating it to be a synthetic version of Kryptonite. Superman questioned who made it, so they interrogated Ivy. After Selina threatened to cut her throat, Ivy revealed the name Hush to the trio. Superman then took her to Arkham Asylum.

Powers and Abilities

Powers

• Kryptonian Physiology: Under the effects of a "yellow" sun, Superman possesses the same potential powers as an average Kryptonian. These include:
  • Solar Energy Absorption: Under optimal conditions, this is the main source of Superman's super powers as they are contingent upon exposure to solar radiation from a yellow sun star system. His biological make up includes a number of organs which lack analogues in humans and whose functions are unknown. It is believed that between one or more of these and his bio-cellular matrix, "yellow" solar energy is stored for later use. This allows for the use of these powers to fade when yellow solar radiation is not available instead of immediate failure.
  • Heat Vision: Superman can, as a conscious act, fire beams of intense heat at a target by looking at it. He can vary the heat and area affected.
  • Super-Hearing: Superman's hearing is sensitive enough to hear any sound at any volume or pitch. With skill and concentration, he can block out ambient sounds to focus on a specific source or frequency.
  • Enhanced Vision: Superman's vision processes the entire electromagnetic spectrum as well as allowing vast control over selective perception and focus.
    This umbrella ability includes the following:
    • Electromagnetic Spectrum Vision: Superman can see well into most of the electromagnetic spectrum. He can see and identify radio and television signals as well as all other broadcast or transmitted frequencies. Using this ability, he can avoid detection by radar or satellite monitoring methods. This also allows him to see the aura generated by living thing.
    • Telescopic Vision: This is the ability to see something at a great distance, without violating the laws of physics. Though limited, the exact extent of the ability is undetermined. In function, it is similar to the zoom lens on a camera.
    • X-Ray Vision: This is the ability to see through any volume of matter except lead. Supermans can see things behind a solid, opaque object as if it were not there. He can focus this ability to "peel back" layers of an object, allowing hidden image or inner workings to be observed. The exact type of energy perceived—such as x-rays, cosmic rays, or some other energy invisible to normal humans—is unclear. This ability perceives an ambient energy source though, it does not involve the eye projecting a concentrated, possibly toxic, beam to be reflected back from objects.
    • Microscopic Vision: This is the ability to see extremely small objects and images down to the atomic level.
    • Infrared Vision: Superman can see with better acuity in darkness, and to a degree in total darkness.
  • Flight: Superman is able to manipulate graviton particles to defy the forces of gravity and achieve flight. This ranges from hovering to moving in any posture, in any direction.
  • Invulnerability: Due to the interaction of his dense molecular structure and supercharged bio-electric aura, Superman is nigh-invulnerable to extreme energy forces. In addition, his extends this protection against toxins and diseases.
    • Enhanced Immunity
  • Superhuman Stamina: Superman is able to maintain continuous strenuous physical action for an indefinite period of time. This based on his body converting yellow solar radiation directly to energy, but is limited by physiological and psychological needs to eat, drink, and sleep.
  • Superhuman Strength: Superman's strength is augmented by yellow solar radiation interacting with the greater than human density, resilience and biological efficiency of his musculature. His strength is more an act of conscious will on energy fields than actual physical strength. It is this act of conscious will that enables him to perform physical feats that are beyond the mere application force, such as moving a mountain top without said rock crumbling under its own mass.
  • Superhuman Speed: Superman is able to move at incredible speed by sheer force of will. This extends to his perceptions and allows for feats such as catching bullets in mid flight as well as covering vast distances in little or no time.
    This also confers:
    • Superhuman Agility
    • Superhuman Reflexes
  • Super-Breath: Superman is able to create hurricane force winds by exhaling air from his lungs. He can chill the air as it leaves his lungs to freeze targets. He can also reverse the process to pull large volumes of air or vapor into his lungs.
  • Longevity: Superman can live longer than regular humans, remaining at his prime as long as he was under the exposure of the "yellow" sun.

Abilities

• Expert Combatant: During combat situations, Superman makes use of an improvised fighting style that relies on overwhelming force and speed. He spent time training with Wonder Woman in combat simulations when learning to master his powers. Clark managed to defeat and subdue demonic possessed versions of the Flash and Wonder Woman. He held his own against Cyborg Superman for a while, when he was still weakened; with limited power. Even without powers he took out an armed military guard, during a siege at Lexcorp.
• Firearms
• Indomitable Will: Superman has shown to have a powerful spirit, free of corruption and temptation. Having been raised by a kindly Kansas farmer and his wife, he was taught to protect life and help others. He is very optimistic and never gives up, even when things look bad.
• Journalism: Clark is one of the best reporters on the Daily Planet, rivaled only by Lois Lane.

Weaknesses

• Kryptonian Physiology: Under the effects of a "yellow" sun, Superman possesses the same potential weaknesses as an average Kryptonian. These include:
  • Vulnerability to Kryptonite
  • Vulnerability to Magic

• Power Loss (Formerly): After Darkseid injected him with liquid Green Kryptonite Clark lost all his powers. He regained them after Trigon possessed him and purged all Kryptonite from his body.
  

Paraphernalia

Equipment

• First Suit: Initially, Superman wore a suit of blue, yellow and red, with the House of El crest on his chest. It lacked the trunks and had a red belt and boots. The collar went up the neck towards his head with a red edge on it. The red edge was also featured on his sleeves where his hands are. His cape also has the house of el crest on it, but it's black. He wore this suit until his inevitable confrontation with Doomsday. The suit was damaged beyond repair.
• Solar Suit: Following his resurrection, Superman wore a black suit with a chrome House of El Crest, as well as cuffs. The suit enhances his ability to process solar energy.
• Second Suit: Following his return from the dead, Superman sported a brand new suit. This one consisted of a body suit, with blue, yellow and red. The suit possesses the House of El crest on both the chest and the cape, with the cape's being yellow. It also lacks the collar the previous suit had, but maintains it's lack of trunks and has a pair of red boots. His belt consists of a red strap with a golden buckle in the shape of his family crest's diamond shape.
• Ear-Piece: Superman wears a standard issued ear-piece to keep in contact with the Justice League.

• This version of the character is exclusive to the continuity of the DC Animated Movie Universe and is an adaptation of Clark Kent/Superman. The original character was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster and first appeared in Action Comics #1.
• Superman was voiced by Alan Tudyk for Justice League: War and Jerry O'Connell for Justice League: Throne of Atlantis and all subsequent movies.
