Clark Kent is the Sheriff of Smallville, Kansas and the last survivor of the ancient Kryptonian civilisation.

In the deepest depths of prehistory, an advanced civilisation known as the Kryptonians flourished in Antarctica. A mysterious event known as the "Doom of Krypton" occurred when Earth and Mars were in alignment, destroying both the Kryptonians and the ancient Martian civilisation. A single capsule was launched from the Kryptonian city into space, where it became stuck in orbit around the Sun.[1]

Thousands of years later in 1859, a solar flare known as the "Carrington Event" dislodged the the capsule from its orbit.[2] One year later the capsule crashed to Earth in the Kansas Territory where it was found by pioneers Jonathan and Martha Kent. This incident was witnessed by Chief Black Condor and the Kansa Tribe.[3]

By 1893, Clark Kent was the Sheriff of a frontier town called Smallville in what was now the state of Kansas. He was the only lawman in the area who did not secretly work for Lex Luthor. Sheriff Kent did not carry a gun but nevertheless became famous for never losing a fight through what appeared to be preternatural luck as bullets would just miss him or bounce off his star; and outlaw's guns would backfire and explode in their hands.[2]

Lois Lane, a reporter who had come to Smallville to investigate Luthor's dealings in the area, was impressed at seeing Sheriff Kent foil a bank robbery and asked him to accompany her to a Wild West show that evening. Kent happily agreed, but later decided to back out because his deputy Pete Ross was planning to take his lady friend Lana and one of them needed to man the sheriff's station. That night the outlaw mesmerist El Diablo came to the sheriff's station and hypnotised Kent into releasing the bank robbers, who were members of his gang. El Diablo then demanded to know where the capsule was and he told them that it was hidden in the bank. They tied the still hypnotised Kent to a chair and set the station on fire with him inside. However, he was unhurt by the flames and walked out when the hypnotist's spell was broken.[4]
