Notes
- This Superman is included in the Multiverse scene in The Flash, played by a digitally deaged Nicolas Cage, in reference to the failed movie Superman Lives, in production in 1997-98.
- Kevin Smith wrote a screenplay based on The Death of Superman and pitched it to producer Jon Peters. The major villains were Brainiac and his pawn, Doomsday, while other characters appearing were Lex Luthor, Lois Lane, Mercy Graves, Perry White, Jimmy Olsen and the Eradicator. Peters demanded several changes to the script and wanted Smith to include Superman fighting a giant spider in the third act.[2] Tim Burton was brought on board as director and wanted to reshape it to his vision, so Wesley Strick was hired to do rewrites, sidelining Smith. Strick's script was too expensive to produce, so further rewrites were done by Dan Gilroy. Though it brought the costs down, executives were still hesitant to continue. Burton, frustrated with the producer and studio, moved on to work on Sleepy Hollow and the movie was shelved. Peters tried to shop around the script to other directors but no one wanted it.
- Throughout the years, several references to the project were added to other movies:
- In Superman: Doomsday, an onlooker, voiced by Kevin Smith, derides Superman fighting a robotic spider.
- Smith directed an episode of Supergirl titled "Supergirl Lives".
- Cage finally got to play Superman in Teen Titans Go!: To the Movies.
Trivia
- Superman Lives was supposed to take place in the Burtonverse/Earth 89, and at least one script would have featured an appearance by Batman.[3] However, DC has not officially confirmed if the version of Superman featured in The Flash (2023) is in the Burtonverse proper.
