The boy known as Kamal is an ancient New God in the form of a human child who has recently arisen to be the new Darkseid.

In the final days of the Second World; Nyctar, the youngest of the three surviving Old Gods, devoured his sister Arbor Struta and imprisoned his brother Parzurem. However, Parzurem had anticipated this and had split his mind into two aspects: the feminine Moder and masculine Paeter, who each escaped the prison and fled into space. Moder became trapped in the orbit of the world which would eventually become New Genesis, while Paeter landed on Earth.

Paeter spent millennia teaching and guiding early humans to usher them into civilisation, becoming the basis for myths such as Prometheus, Dyaus and Pitamaha. He became fascinated by humans' short lives and decided he wished to discover what it was to die. However, he worried what would happen if ever Nycatar came to Earth and so he placed his power within a living weapon in the shape of a human baby, the first New God, to defend his children if the need ever arose. He placed Kamal underneath a Chola temple in India and then walked off into the jungle to die.[1]

Darkseid is a constant, representing one of the two essential, primal forces of reality. He embodies constraint and control that opposes the life and hope represented by Superman. All of creation needs a Darkseid, so if he disappears, the universe will create a new one. When Uxas, the original Darkseid, vanished into the Absolute Universe, Kamal awoke to replace him.[2]

Kamal was found in the temple and adopted by an archaeologist and his wife who had lost their own child three years ago.[3] Many players on Earth and beyond sought to kill or take control of Kamal before he came into his full power. One of these was Maxwell Lord, who sent a squad of soldiers after Kamal and his parents. This caused Kamal's powers to activate and he disintegrated the attackers.[4] The family fled and went into hiding.[3] Lord's men tracked them down and attempted to kill Kamal's parents, but they were saved by Mister Miracle and Big Barda.[1] Orion then came to kill Kamal; he and Barda briefly exchanged blows and Kamal's powers activated again.[5]

Barda held Orion off while Mister Miracle attempted to reason with him, but Orion refused to listen. Eventually Superman arrived to break up the fight.[6] A ship carrying refugees from New Genesis appeared in the sky and hurtled towards Earth. All sides broke off the fight to stop it from crashing.[7]
