History
Origin
Kate was born Clark Godwin and grew up as a boy for most her early life but began to realise she was more comfortable as a girl in her teens. She was subsequently the victim of intense bullying growing up and exposed to frequent transphobia into her adult life. At some point she underwent hormone therapy, sex reassignment surgery and minor facial plastic surgery to make herself more comfortable in her own skin.[1] She had a career in computer programming as well as prostitution. It was while working as a prostitute that Kate gained her powers after sleeping with Rebis, a combination of Larry Trainor, a Negative Energy being, and physician Eleonore Poole. After the experience, she found herself able to liquefy solids and solidify liquids, each with just a touch.
Doom Patrol
After acquiring her powers Kate tried to become a superhero, naming herself Coagula, and applied to join the Justice League but was turned down. Her fortunes would change however when, by chance, she encountered the super-villain Codpiece, who was using his high-tech weaponry to go on a spree of bank robberies. Donning a novelty frog mask from a costume store to hide her identity, Coagula was able to get him to lower his guard with flattery, then melt his arsenal of weaponry with a touch, capturing the villain. The scene was noticed by two bystanders, George and Marion, who happened to be members of the Doom Patrol and proceeded to offer Kate a place on their team.[2]
Kate was brought to the Doom Patrol's head Niles Caulder for an interview. While the two argued, Kate ultimately decided to join the team, although she decided not to wear the superhero costume she had made for herself after realising that none of the other members of the Doom Patrol wore costumes anymore.[3] Over time she would become very close to her teammate Cliff, after they bonded over their shared body dysphoria, with Kate's transgender background and Cliff's cyborg history. Kate would also grow close to Dorothy Spinner when she helped her gain better control of her powers with the help of a witchdoctor.[4]
After some years working together in the Doom Patrol tragedy would strike the team when Kate and Cliff brought Dorothy on a camping trip with the intention of uniting her with her birth mother. When Kate told Dorothy of their plans however, she panicked out of fear that Kate and Cliff wanted rid of her. The resulting distress caused Dorothy's psychic powers to trigger an explosion that outright killed Kate and sent Dorothy and Cliff into comas from which the former would never awake.[5]
