The King of Spades is often the highest ranking card in the Royal Flush Gang. In the many incarnations of the gang, several people have used the alias. The first was Kerry, the original King of Clubs. Kerry and the rest of the gang changed to Spades after their original Ace, Amos Fortune, went to prison and a new Ace stepped up. After several failed robberies, the gang switched suits back to Clubs to differentiate them from the new Royal Flush Gang.
The second King was Joe Carny, King of Hoboes, a homeless cancer patient until Wild Card recruited him. In the aftermath of the Invasion! event, Carny was granted immortality by the Gene Bomb, forever dooming him to suffer his cancer. Carny still operates under the title, though others have taken up the title after the Royal Flush Gang expanded into a national criminal enterprise.
Kerry first appeared in Justice League of America #43 (1968), and became King of Spades in The Joker #5 (1976). Joe Carny first appeared in Justice League of America #203 (1982).
