The Kingdoms of the Underworld was a vast subterranean world of forests, mountains, and underwater cities within the crust of the Earth.
History
Historically, contact between the Kingdoms of the Underworld and any part of the surface world has been extremely rare. Very few human explorers are even rumored to have visited any of these locations: Brad Hardy, who found an entrance in the mountains of Mongolia, Cotton Carver, who discovered an entrance in Antarctica, and Mark Lansing, who found one in Africa.
Compare with Skartaris, an inverted world originally thought to be located inside the Earth and which was reached through portals near the poles, and Strata, an advanced underground civilization of many intelligent species.

In 1940 Mark Lansing and his associate Koda the Silent One inadvertently discovered an entrance a subterranean world, somewhere under Africa, and had an adventure from which they were lucky to escape alive. Their escape however took them to an even stranger place called Mikishawm, "a strange craggy world with two moons," which they reached via an underground Tube Car.[30]
