Synopsis for "Chapter One: Crack in the Facade"

In his fortress on New Kandor, General Zod argues with his hated enemy Jor-El. Jor-El tells Zod that he is a soldier without war and struggling with the responsibilities of being a ruler rather than a conqueror. Zod denies this and says that New Kandor will thrive as Krypton never did, but Jor-El predicts he will fail just like he failed to conquer Krypton all those years ago. Jor-El says that Zod is only capable of destruction and cannot build an empire, and just as Zod is about to attack him he receives a call from the Eradicator. Zod orders the Eradicator not to interrupt them, but the Eradicator tells him that he is alone. Zod looks again and Jor-El is gone.

Zod goes to speak with Ursa, who is pregnant with their second child. She can tell that he is distracted but he tells her he is totally focussed on their goals. The Eradicator reports that the "Forbidden Zone" in the southern hemisphere has been breached. They both instantly know that Lor-Zod is responsible and Zod says that their son is openly defying him and inviting a fight. Ursa asks him if there is any alternative to what he is planning to do, but he says there is not and the time has finally come, which she reluctantly accepts.

Zod flies to the Forbidden Zone, where Lor-Zod has uncovered a massive superweapon constructed from Sunstone. Lor-Zod is angry that his father tried to keep it a secret from him and demands to know what it is for. Zod replies that it is a deterrent to prevent the United Planets interfering in their affairs but Lor-Zod insists that they should unleash it on the galaxy and accuses his father of no longer having the stomach for conquest. Zod strikes him, saying he will not be disrespected and his insolence will no longer be tolerated. They briefly fight, and Zod momentarily freezes up when he envisions Lor-Zod as Superman, but quickly recovers and easily overpowers his son. Zod tells his son that life on New Krypton has made him weak and exiles him.

A month later, Zod broods over the original bottle city of Kandor, which holds thousands of miniaturised Kryptonians in stasis that he is planning to colonise Jekuul with once he finds the technology to return them to normal size. Ursa comes to speak with him, although their relationship has been strained since Lor-Zod was banished. It is revealed that Lor-Zod was not actually exiled for defiance, but because it is tradition in the House of Zod to cast out the firstborn son to face his own trials and prove himself worthy. The Eradicator alerts them to an attack on the planet and Zod flies off to respond. He finds Khund pirates raiding a native village, assuming that the planet was undefended; and brutally slaughters them. Later the United Planets council calls Zod and warns him that they have received reports of hostilities in the sector and are monitoring him closely.
