Knight Terrors: Superman #1 is an issue of the series Knight Terrors: Superman (Volume 1) with a cover date of September, 2023. It was published on July 18, 2023.
Synopsis for "Man of Screams!"
After discovering Dr. Destiny's body in the Hall of Justice, Superman flies back to Metropolis and attempts to call Mercy Graves, wanting Supercorp to investigate this recent event. Suddenly, Insomnia's energy wave hits Superman, who falls asleep mid-flight. Much like the rest of the superhero community, Superman is now trapped in the realm of nightmares.
As he awakens, Clark finds himself on his cubicle at the Daily Planet, surrounded by shapeshifting versions of Lois and Jimmy. Suddenly, Perry walks into the bullpen and presents his latest newspaper, titled "Whole World Saved Forever!". Apparently, every problem in the world has been solved. Lex, also present at the bullpen, credits this accomplishment to his cooperation with Superman. Clark, however, doesn't believe this to be real, knowing that he just saw Dr. Destiny's dead body at the Hall of Justice.
In that moment, a huge tidal wave hits Metropolis and Clark attempts to stop it, only to find his uniform gone. Clark believes he is trapped in some kind of dream, only for Perry to reveal that Clark is trapped in a nightmare. He tears off his own face and reveals himself to be Insomnia, who demands to know where the Nightmare Stone is. Despite his current predicament, Clark is still worried for his friends and family, so he tries to attack Insomnia, who forces Clark into another nightmare.
Clark is forced to experience the destruction of the entire world, whether it's by fire, ice, nuclear bombardment or an alien invasion. He lands on a mound of skulls, where he is confronted by a winged creature with a skull for a face. He is the Man of Screams and he claims to have been created by Clark's own fears, the fears he keeps hidden beneath his smiles and values.
In yet another attempt to torment Clark, the Man of Screams shows him a vision of a dying Krypton. As Clark's Kryptonian spaceship approaches Earth, the Man of Screams cuts the planet in half with a swing of his scythe. He attacks Clark and claims that he never escaped Krypton's destruction; instead, it followed him and now, Earth is doomed to suffer that same fate. Clark's own future has two paths: destruction or solitude.
The Man of Screams disappears, but not before Clark steals his scythe. Suddenly, he is found by Supergirl, who has escaped a nightmare of her own. With the two El cousins reunited, they wonder about how they can stop Insomnia and save their friends. Supergirl admits that she entered Clark's nightmare to escape from an army of monstruous Supergirls, each having originated from alternate universes and parallel timelines. As the El cousins prepare for battle, Clark reminds Kara that this is all just a dream.
In the waking world, Superman's body is recovered by Aquaman and his family. With Superman affected by Insomnia's powers, Aquaman decides that only he can save the world.
