Synopsis for "Dead Rising"
Immediately following the events of Knight Terrors #1, standing within the graveyard after being resurrected, Sandman acknowledges that the Batman standing before him is not really Batman, and that he is in some kind of possession by a ghost. Deadman confirms Sandman's suspicions and admits he is possessing Batman's body. He proceeds to explain Insomnia, the Nightmare Stone, and how he saw Sandman in a vision upon Insomnia's possession, inquiring as to why Sandman was present in his memories.
Sandman goes on to explain his history with the Nightmare Stone, explaining it was a case in his distant past that involved an obsessed cult surrounding the stone. The cult consisted of extremely wealthy men following ancient self-sacrificial scripture as instructions on how to resurrect the Nightmare Stone and materialize it into the real world. Sandman intercepted the ritual as the men were committing suicide, knowing that every life sacrificed would materialize the stone that much more until one could finally take possession of it. Just as the stone had barely finished materializing, Sandman explains how he swapped the poisonous juice the men would drink to die for the stone, with sleeping potion instead. Only one man had successfully stabbed and killed himself for the stone, the rest simply falling asleep, which was not a sufficient amount of sacrifice required for the stone to fully take form. As a result, Sandman watched as the stone faded out of existence, admitting he had not known where it had gone or was being kept before the ritual took place. In the past, Dr. Fate had told Sandman an item that could bridge the Dreamworld and waking world was dangerous, and should never fall into the wrong hands.
Deadman thanks Sandman for the information and offers to put him back to rest in his coffin. Sandman refuses, saying the case involving the stone haunted him and that he wants to see it through to the end. Deadman asks if any of the cult members might still be alive and knows the location to the stone, to which Sandman states they are likely all dead considering the case was so long ago. Upon entering the Batmobile, they receive a distress call from Terrifictech saying they need all the help they can following the repercussions of the entire planet falling asleep.
Meanwhile, an old man revealed to be the son of a former Nightmare Stone cult member sleeps in his bed dreaming of himself as an opulent King surrounded by wine and gold. One of his butlers, who is revealed to be Insomnia invading his dream, inquires as to the location of the stone. The man admits know one ever knew its whereabouts, including his father. Outraged, Insomnia shoves a bag of gold coins down his throat, killing him.
At Terrifictech, Red Tornado summarizes the chaos that ensued following the entire planet falling asleep simultaneously and how the non-human robot entities such as himself and the Metal Men were forced to keep control in the turmoil. He shows Mr. Terrific encased in a tank of water stasis, stating that he and the rest of the world are slipping into a deepening sleep coma, one from which they will not awaken the longer they spend in the nightmare realm. Deadman in Batman's body collapses in pain, stating after his possession of Insomnia, he now shares a connection with him including memories and visions. Deadman slips into a vision after collapsing.
During the vision, Deadman travels to Arkham Tower months ago where Insomnia, then known as Mr. Lukas, is being moved in a wheelchair to a day room for Arkham inmates. A newscast is broadcast in the room reiterating the events of Dark Crisis and announcing the Justice League have seemingly come back to life after being declared dead. Outraged at this, Lukas flips tables and starts to scream in anger before being tranquilized by doctors and taken back to his room to be placed into a state of continuous sleep, a form of forced suppression by abusive Arkham staff. Insomnia in real time screams for Deadman to get out of his thoughts, to which Deadman in Batman's body startles awake. Sandman explains that if Deadman has the ability to tap into Insomnia's thoughts, it would be possible for Insomnia to tap into Deadman's as well.
Suddenly, the power goes out in Terrifictech, leaving Sandman and Deadman in the dark. Stepping out of the shadows is a decapitated Red Tornado with a large nightmare creature holding his head in plain view.
