Synopsis for "Dead by Dawn"
Sandman fires his sleep gas at the coming onslaught of nightmare creatures, whom Sandman calls the “Sleepless Knights”, while Deadman possessing Batman's body throws batarangs, but with no effect from either. Red Tornado's decapitated robot head is shown on the floor. The two retreat into the room where Mr. Terrific is asleep in a sealed water stasis tank and are backed into a corner. Suddenly, Robin (Damian Wayne) jumps in between them and the monsters, ordering them to make their way to the rooftops. As Deadman and Sandman retreat, Damian stays behind killing as many Sleepless Knights as possible. The Batwing jet hovers outside just above the Terrifictech roof where moments later Damian, Sandman, and Deadman are safely lifted inside and escape.
While flying in the Batwing, Damian calls out Deadman in regards to his father and his possession, to which he orders Deadman to leave the body. Deadman reluctantly obeys and is surprised at the fact that Damian is able to see him outside of a body in his ghostly form. Damian acknowledges his past experience with death has granted him the ability to see things others cannot. He goes on to explain his nightmare where Insomnia had invaded his dreams, resulting in a rigorous training regiment involving his mind, learning greater control over his dreams and the art of staying awake, which explains how Damian is not amongst the rest of the sleeping world.
Deadman suggests tapping into Insomnia's mind once more if they are going to find any clues as to how to find the Nightmare Stone first. Sandman advises against this, warning that the Sleepless Knights would be able to track them down to their exact location if this was attempted again. Deadman rationalizes by telling him they are already on their trail before slipping into another memory of Insomnia.
In the vision, Deadman sees Insomnia's true identity, his name revealed to be Christopher Lukas, attending an Alcoholics Anonymous style “survivors meeting”, consisting of victims who lived through the events of Dark Crisis months prior. In the meeting, Christopher admits that he has been unable to sleep for quite some time, seeing his family, (presumed deceased) everytime he closes his eyes. As Christopher pours himself a cup of coffee, the psychologist sympathizes with him and states that one day, hopefully, he can forgive the Justice League. Outraged, Christopher shatters the glass coffee kettle against the psychologist's head before taking a glass shard and stabbing him to death along with the rest of the victims at the meeting. After, Christopher cuts his own upper eyelids off, stating that now he can never fall asleep again until the Justice League pay. Insomnia acknowledges Deadman's presence in the vision and warns him not to venture deeper into his thoughts, as he won't like what he finds.
Deadman awakens disturbed, telling Damian and Sandman that Insomnia still has not found the Nightmare Stone. Damian suggests it logically must be in the space between the waking world and dreamworld, a place Deadman calls “the Hollow” also known to some as “the Reality Stream”. Sandman offers to help get Damian and Deadman there via one of his chemical gasses that he explains can put them into a state of “being not quite awake and not quite dreaming”. The two agree and fall into the Hollow together. Just as Damian and Deadman become catatonic, one of the Sleepless Knights breeches the Batwing hull and attacks. Sandman uses a samurai style sword to defend Damian and Deadman while they search the Hollow for the Nightmare Stone.
Deadman and Damian venture a desert landscape and come across a small abandoned wooden hut which Deadman recognizes as the House of Horror. Inside is a simulated circus tent where a projection of Deadman's past self is dying of a gunshot wound upon the floor. Deadman acknowledges the stone is showing him this a test, because the stone requires a sacrifice to obtain. Deadman approaches his projection and tears apart its bloodied chest as the projection screams in pain.
Back on the batwing, Sandman manages to decapitate the Sleepless Knight, which shortly after, picks up its own head and continues to attack him. Moments later, Deadman and Damian awaken with purple light in their eyes and the Nightmare Stone in hand. Deadman uses the stone to shoot a purple beam of light at the Sleepless Knight, destroying it. He tells Sandman while continuing to hold the stone, that they can finally use it to stop Insomnia.
