The Knights Templar, or simply the Templars, was a Catholic military order, one of the most wealthy and popular military orders in the world. They were founded in Jerusalem.
History
New Earth
The Knights Templar had a falling-out with the Order of St. Dumas, and they left the Templars before King Philip the Fair came and suppressed the Knights.
The splinter group devoted itself to the teachings of "Saint" Dumas (who, according to Oracle, "no one else ever accused of being a saint."[1]
The Knights Templar also used the oracle Baphomet to foresee catastrophic events.[2]
Prime Earth
The Templar Knight began during the Crusades. The Templar Knight Dumas was traveling on the road to Jerusalem alongside other members of his order when they witnessed a great battle in the sky between what they believed to be a battle between an angel and a demon- in actuality, a clash between the New Gods Orion and Kalibak. In the chaos of the battle, one of the pair lost their Mother Box, which fell to the ground and was recovered by the knights, who believed it to be a gift.
They formed a splinter order, the Order of St. Dumas, and using the technology of the Mother Box, turned a member of their order, Brother Ebner into an abomination, named for the angel whose biblical name meant 'Adversary'- the Satan. Their experiments on Ebner gave birth to what would become known as 'The System'.[3]
In time, the order used this knowledge to create the Azraels, a hereditary line of near-superhuman enforcers and assassins.[4]
