Synopsis for "Knock Knock, Mr. Joker!"

Following the events of Batman vs. Two-Face, the Joker is trying to sleep in his prison cell one night at Gotham State Penitentiary. He suddenly awakes from a sound and sees that it was caused by a shadowy figure sneaking around in front of the door to his cell. The mysterious woman glues a time bomb to the door, which then explodes moments later and blows the entrance to the cell open. As the smoke clears, Dr. Harleen Quinzel approaches him wearing a red and black jester suit and carrying a mallet. She then introduces herself to her "Puddin'" as the "new and improved Harley Quinn"...

Notes

  • This short was originally produced as a scene for the 2017 animated movie Batman vs. Two-Face, but was eventually dropped from the final version of the movie. However, the planned but deleted sequence was later repurposed into the Knock Knock, Mr. Joker! short and released as a bonus feature along with the actual film.
    • The short is included on the UK Standard Blu-ray and the Steelbook release of the movie, on which it was given the official title "Knock Knock, Mr Joker!".
    • Prior to Adam West's passing in June 2017, the Harley Quinn scene was seemingly going to serve as a cliffhanger to tease another animated sequel. Following the release of the animated movie Batman vs. Two-Face, Burt Ward teased the potential for a third animated movie set in the continuity of the 1966 Batman TV series.[1][2]
  • Concept art shows that several different costume ideas were explored for a 1966 version of Harley Quinn before the production team ultimately settled on the final design.[3]
  • The origin of Harley Quinn in the Batman vs. Two-Face movie and this short retcons the Holly Quinn character that was introduced as a 1966-style Harley Quinn equivalent in the Batman '66 comic series. Similarly, the backstories of Two-Face and Hugo Strange from the comic series were also ignored for the animated continuation.
  • Knock Knock, Mr. Joker! is almost an exact adaptation of a scene from The Batman Adventures: Mad Love and the animated The New Batman Adventures episode "Mad Love", in which Harley Quinn frees the Joker from Arkham Asylum.
