Starfire (real name Princess Koriand'r) is an alien princess from the planet Tamaran and a founding member of the Teen Titans.

Orangin

Starfire is from Tamaran who comes from the planet. Before coming to Earth, she was an alien princess on the planet Tamaran with a contentious relationship with her older sister Blackfire. Blackfire sold her sister into slavery to the Gordanians, but Starfire escaped to Earth, hoping to make a new life on the alien planet. [8]

In one version of Starfire's origin - or as the Titans call them "orangins", as a child, Starfire went to see a movie with her two favorite cats but, while taking a shortcut home through an alleyway, they were scared off by a thuggish dog. 10 years later, having been traumatized by the incident, Starfire became a cat-themed vigilante, with a cat-themed lair and gadgets, as well as a butler cat named "Kitty Alfred". Starfire's arch-nemesis was a dog named Laughing Dog and, at one point, to make her story more tragic, she had her back broken by Doggy Bane. As pointed out by Robin, this narrative was untrue and just a parody of Batman's origin. [9]

Joining the Teen Titans

Story 1

Starfire came to Earth from her home planet of Tamaran and took up residence in Jump City, California. With no friends and a naïve understanding of Earth, Starfire was fascinated with the idea of eating cats, as influenced by the television show ALF.

Starfire was contacted by the newly independent hero Robin, who invited her to audition for the new super-team he was forming called the Teen Titans. Robin, easily frustrated, yelled at Starfire while she tried to eat someone's pet cat, teaching her to pet them instead of eating them.

At the auditions, Robin cut Starfire from the team because she failed his tests. Instead, he chose Kid Flash, Aqualad, Speedy, and Bumblebee to form his team. However, the other recruits decided they didn't like Robin as their leader and voted to kick him off his own team.

Robin reconnected with the heroes he had originally cut and, all feeling like rejects, decided to team up themselves to get Titans Tower back from Kid Flash's team. Robin, Starfire, and the other rejects challenged Kid Flash to a competition for the rights to the tower, and Kid Flash accepted. Though the rules were rigged against them, Robin's Titans cheated their way into Titans Tower and kicked the other team out of Jump City for good.

Officially, the rejects had become Jump City's sole protectors - the Teen Titans. [10]

Story 2

In another version of the story, Starfire was freed from Gordanian captivity by Robin, hoping to recruit her as his love interest to the new team he was forming. Starfire used her Tamaraneans to immediately learn English through lip-to-lip contact, which Robin interpreted as a kiss. Starfire, however, said she didn't see it that way and that Robin had bad breath. Robin left Starfire a card to contact him to join his team anyway. Later, while Robin was stopping a robbery in Jump City by himself, Starfire and the other invited heroes assembled for the first time, forming the Teen Titans.

Though the Titans liked this version of the story, they didn't think anyone would ever believe it. [11]

Teen Titans Movie

After the success of their movie, the Teen Titans basked in their 15 minutes of fame until, 20 minutes later, they discovered they had become has-beens. Darkseid refused to fight them, having seen their movie and disliked their humor, Baloon Man got an inflated head about his role in the movie and thought he outgrew the stars, and the H.I.V.E. Five refused to associate with the Titans to preserve their own reputation.

Though the Titans went into a temporary depression from their crashing fame, they found renewed interest in crimefighting - focusing on petty crimes like littering and overdue library books.

Soon after, the Titans decided to seek new jobs in the movie industry. Starfire found a niche as a language coach for movies, but her own struggles with the English language negatively affected the movies she worked on. However, the Titans became disillusioned with behind-the-scenes work as well and, upon declaring their return to the "real world", they discovered they were actually in a comic book the whole time, having been trapped by Control Freak. Eventually, they returned to the status quo. [12]

Powers

Abilities

  • Lying: Starfire, at first, had an uncanny disability of not being able to lie. However, after some training from Beast Boy, Starfire gained the ability to lie flawlessly and, unfortunately, rampantly.[16]
  • Mechanical Engineering: Starfire had enough skill with mechanics to build an entire army of Deathbots in a day.[17]

Other Characteristics

  • Allergies: Starfire claims to have an acute dust allergy; she sneezes if she's around too much dust. [18]

  • Starfire, like the other Titans, was between the ages of 15 and 18 when she first joined the team. [19]
