History

Earth-One

The Kryptonian Weaponry Cache was created out of necessity by Jor-El to safeguard the banned weapons which his nephew Kru-El had built. Kru-El had subsequently been banished to the Phantom Zone - by Jor-El personally - for the crime. When a large enough number of Kryptonian criminals had followed Kru-El to the Zone, their psychic energy proved too much for those with a weakened mind. Thus when Jor-El had been infected with the Scarlet Jungle Fever, the Phantom Zoners almost made him open the door to release them. Only Lara's well-timed slap kept the Phantom Zone closed.[1]

Having told the Kryptonian Science Council what had transpired, Jor-El was ordered (somewhat ironically, Jor-El noted) to fire the Weaponry Cache into space, scant days before Krypton's destruction.

Decades later the Cache crashed to Earth and it was brought to Superboy. It contained the Phantom Zone Projector, a Time-Displacement Device,[2] an Enlarging Ray, a Thought-Helmet, and an Electro-Atomic Disintegrator.[3] Superboy kept the Cache hidden in various places - including the bottom of the ocean - until it was found by escaped Phantom Zoners. Having realized the danger of the Weaponry existing, Superman and Supergirl melted it with their heat vision; only saving the Thought Helmet and recreating the Phantom Zone Projector.[2]
