Princess Laethwen was the princess of Morlaidh, a tiny alien civilization stranded in the Amazon Rainforest. She was wed to the visitor the Atom (Ray Palmer).

Origin

Laethwen is part of a six inch high alien race called the Katarthans that crash landed on Earth long ago. Her people settled in the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil building a tiny city of Morlaidh. She was born the princess of her people but felt her father King Caellich was an unjust ruler and she fell in love with the head of the rebels, Taren.

Sword of the Atom

Princess Laethwen was present to witness an outsider arrive at the city, the Atom. He was taken prisoner and forced to battle in their gladiatorial games against Taren. Together they escape but not before Taren was blinded. Taren later committed suicide to prevent his rebels from having to protect a blind man in the jungles. The Atom become the new leader of the rebellion. After Atom became leader, he took Laethwen as his mate although he was still married to Jean Loring.[1]

Laethwen didn't know that her father was being framed by his adviser Deraegis. Atom, Laethwen and Voss led an assault on Morlaidh at the same time Caellich exposes Deraegis. Caellich gets stabbed from behind by Deraegis himself during the commotion. Laethwen was able to visit her father one last time on his death bed as the king was able to hold out until he saw her.[2]

Laethwen's romance with the Atom also ended when Deragis was defeated and Atom saved the people of the city by absorbing the White Dwarf energy that would have killed everyone. Unfortunately the absorption of the power caused Atom to enlarge to his normal height and destroy the city. He was not able to shrink back down and was lost and disoriented in the jungle. Atom was later miraculously found and taken to a hospital where Jean finds him though he makes plans to search for Laethwen.[3]
