Synopsis for "Black Hood's Burden"

The editor of I Remember Heroes magazine reads to an audience the correspondence from Major Harold Andrew Benson in British-occupied India to his fiancé, which he believes to be evidence of the historical activity of the superhero the Black Hood.

In 1859, Benson deploys to Mumbai, then called Bombay, and befriends local governmental clerk Manilal Naidu, who tells him the story of the Hooded Ghost, a mysterious figure who rebels against the occupying British regime. Benson is tasked by his superiors with the elimination of the Hooded Ghost, and is haunted both by nightmares and his compatriots' bigotry towards the Indian people, while Naidu is removed from his position when two of his relatives are identified as insurrectionists by Benson's investigation.

Abruptly, Benson breaks off his engagement, cuts his other ties to England, and confronts the Hooded Ghost. He shoots the Ghost dead, only to discover that he was Naidu. Keeping the Ghost's hood, Benson resigns his post to open a multicultural school in the hopes of helping to overcome the conflicts between the indigenous peoples of India.
