Notes
- Adams wrote Life, the Universe and Everything as an original novel in 1982, as opposed to the previous books in the series, which he initially wrote as radio plays before adapting them into books.
- The story was originally outlined by Adams as a Doctor Who TV serial called "The Krikkitmen", but it was rejected by the BBC, and so Adams reworked it into the third novel in his Hitchhiker's Guide series.
- Slartibartfast replaced the Doctor.
- The Bistromath replaced the TARDIS.
- The Krikkit War Robots replaced the Daleks.

- Despite there being three subsequent Hitchhiker's Guide novels, this was the last one to be adapted to comic form.
