The Lightning Master was a criminal scientist who battled Superman with a deadly lightning cannon.

History

Lightning Master first menaced Metropolis in 1941 when he held the city for ransom, but was defeated by Superman and apparently died in the fighting.

Lightning Master survived, and appeared a few weeks later working for Ian Karkull. Karkull sent Lightning Master to destroy a military hospital in Arkansas (to kill future President Harry S. Truman, not that Lightning Master knew that was Karkull's goal). Lightning Master was again defeated by Superman with help from Johnny Thunder and his Thunderbolt and presumably sent to jail.

Notes

• This version of Lightning Master, including all history and corresponding appearances, was erased from existence following the collapse of the original Multiverse in the 1985–86 Crisis on Infinite Earths event and later restored following the rebirth of the infinite Multiverse during the Dark Crisis of 2022-2023. Even though other versions of the character may have appeared, this information does not apply to those versions.
• Various post-Crisis stories (including Green Lantern Corps Quarterly #1 and JSA #7– #9) have made it clear that some version of the story from All-Star Squadron Annual #3 still happened in post-Crisis continuity. However, none of those references or retellings have shown that Lightning Master is still a part of the story, so he is not considered a New Earth character.
