Synopsis for "Tarzan of the Apes"
This story is reprinted from Tarzan #208.
A young girl, searching for her father in the African jungle, continues to listen to her guide's tale of a wild ape man,Tarzan (which means white skin), and how he lived among the apes. Kala, his adoptive ape mother and the king ape, Kerchak, who had killed Lord Greystoke, his father, are part of his tribe. A night of wild dancing, or dum-dum occurs and the celebration is about the slaying of a marauder ape. Tarzan cuts some of the flesh with a sharp knife, and this makes Tublat mad. Tarzan escapes, but Tublat attacks Kala to lure Tarzan down from the trees. The plan results in the swift death of Tublat by the same knife that a 13 year old Tarzan used to kill Bolgani.
Tarzan searches for meaning in the library of his parents hut, and teaches himself somewhat the meaning of letters. He realizes that he is a man, although he does not know how to speak the word. Shortly after his realization, a torrential rain storm cause havoc in the jungle and the tribe flees for safety. Because of the coldness of the rain Tarzan longs for a fur coat like a lion has. He makes a rope to catch the lion, while another she ape , looks kindly towards Tarzan because of his bravery. Tarzan challenges Taug who also seeks the affection of the she-ape. A panther attacks the she-ape, Teena,, and Tarzan rushes to save her, capturing the panther in a tree with his rope.
A group of people move near the apes and Tarzan observes they are men, but black. While back looking at his parent’s books, Kulonga a chief, when hunting shoots an arrow into Kala, and fled because of her screams. She is dead when Tarzan arrives and tracks down his adoptive, mother’s killer, and slays him, taking his lion cloth, and even some arrows from the village. Tarzan becomes proficient with the bow and arrow, and eventually kills the lioness, and skins her, and now has a fur coat. This causes some jealousy of Kerchak and perhaps fear of Tarzan.

Meanwhile, clues from his parent's journals have enabled the Lieutenant to prove Tarzan's true identity. His English name is "John Clayton, Lord Greystoke," William's cousin. He sends a cablegram to America with the news. Tarzan reads D'Arnot's message, but does not share it with Jane.
