History

An artificial 'protoplasmic' lifeform, Matrix was the only survivor from a pocket universe destroyed by super-powered Kryptonian criminals despite Superman's assistance. Superman took the wounded Matrix with him back to his universe.

Unsure of itself, the shapeshifter attempted to model itself after Superman, eventually taking the identity of Supergirl.

She met Lex Luthor and allied herself with him. In her universe, Luthor had been a brave and honorable man and she assumed that he was similar. Supergirl became Luthor's bodyguard and lover, often coming into conflict with Superman. Eventually, she discovered that Luthor had been attempting to clone an army based off of her. Upon discovering this, she uncovered the full nature of Luthor's duplicity and ended their relationship.

She got along very well with the Kents and briefly stayed with them in Smallville.

Matrix also briefly joined the Teen Titans after helping them defeat an evil version of Raven.

Matrix had promised to find a missing woman, Linda Danvers. Linda had fallen in with cultists and was to be sacrificed. She was stabbed repeatedly by Buzz. Matrix bonded itself to the dying Linda, forming a new being, one seeking humanity, the other a chance to start over.

Linda later merged with one of three 'earth-born angels.' She gained and lost power due to this situation. Eventually, the angel left her.

Currently, Linda has retired from active superheroing after encountering the Kara Zor-El that would be killed during the Crisis on Infinite Earths.
