Lionel Luthor (or sometimes Jules Luthor) is the father of Superman's nemesis Lex Luthor. He also has a daughter named Lena Luthor (and sometimes other children too). There have been several origins depicting him differently, although he is consistently seen as an abusive parent living in Smallville, Kansas. On Earth-One, he changed the family name to Thorul after Lex turned to crime. On New Earth, Lex is shown to have murdered his father at a young age to collect on the life insurance policy. Lionel Luthor was created by Jerry Siegel and Kurt Schaffenberger, first appearing as Jules Thorul in Superman's Girl Friend, Lois Lane #23. (1961)
