Lois Lane is a former reporter who became the Spider Lady, the head of Metropolis' underworld. She used her criminal resources to fight the machinations of Dr. Atom.
History
Lois always sensed that her existence had been edited, as if parts had been left on the cutting room floor. She and her colleague Jimmy Olsen investigated why the world kept getting worse day by day, and eventually determined that a cross-dimensional conspiracy led by a man named Dr. Atom was responsible. They prepared an expose on the conspiracy when the Daily Planet was bombed. Lois was the only survivor and spent weeks in a coma. While comatose she had a dream about Superman, a man who could fly and would save them. When she awoke she learned that she had been presumed dead. She changed her appearance and adopted the identity of the Spider Lady. As Spider Lady she took control of the criminal gangs who ruled Metropolis and began to work against Dr. Atom from the underworld, operating out of the ruins of the Daily Planet building which she renamed the Spider's Nest.[1]
Two years later, she learned that the warden of Arkham Asylum was involved in the conspiracy and was performing medical experiments on the inmates. She attempted to break some inmates out but was foiled by Batman and Robin. She told Batman the truth about the conspiracy and encouraged him to investigate. She managed to escape from police custody during the transfer back to the Asylum and returned to Metropolis.[2]
Later that night, two strangers broke in to her office in the Spider's Nest: a duplicate of herself and the man from her dreams. Batman and Robin had followed her lead and discovered Dr. Atom's headquarters and his portal to a parallel reality, the home of the alternate Lois Lane and Superman. She told them about the conspiracy and Jimmy's theory that reality was thin in places where things were missing, and Superman used beams of heat from his eyes to create a portal back to his own world. They were attacked by Warden Luthor, who was armed with a Kryptonite bracelet that incapacitated Superman and accompanied by three mutated inmates. Spider Lady held off Luthor and his henchmen while Superman, Batman, Robin and the other Lois escaped to the other world. It's unclear what happened after that but both she and the warden survived.[1]
Dr. Atom was eventually defeated and the conspiracy was dismantled with Warden Luthor as the only member left at large. With his army of inmates he took over Metropolis and renamed it Lexopolis. Spider Lady created an underground resistance movement called the Spider Syndicate which included Alexandra and Ray Jones, the wife and son of Rudy Jones, one of the inmates she had earlier tried to free.
As Superman had more experience dealing with mad scientists than Batman, he crossed over to stop Warden Luthor. The Man of Steel fought through his army of mind-controlled supervillains but was defeated by Luthor's Omni-Battery and had to be rescued by the Syndicate. They took him back to their headqaurters, and when he woke up he explained that he had been unable to destroy the battery because it was a living person- Rudy Jones. When Superman realised that Alexandra and Ray were Rudy's family, he took the Syndicate to Luthor's headquarters for a second attack. While Superman, Spider Lady and the Syndicate held off Luthor's army, Alexandra and Ray were able to help Rudy overcome Luthor's brainwashing. Rudy and Superman knocked Luthor out and he was taken to prison.
With Luthor defeated, Superman told Spider Lady that he was in love with her, more than he loved the Lois of his own world. She confessed that she loved him too, but didn't see how there could be a future for them as they were from different worlds. Superman took her to The Fortress of the Knight, a dimensional nexus he and Batman had created between their worlds, explaining that they could easily visit each other. Batman and Robin suddenly entered the Fortress from The World of Tomorrow persued by that world's Alfred Pennyworth, who had transformed into a Doomsday-like creature. Superman defeated Alfred and he and Spider Lady kissed.[3]
