The Scorpion was the nemesis of Captain Marvel.
History
Bentley was a member of an archeological expedition into Siam, which discovered an ancient scorpion idol possessing fantastic abilities when its lenses were aligned. The expedition members split up the lenses to ensure the idol's powers could only be used if all members agreed. He crafted the alter ego of the Scorpion to pass himself off as the scorpion god worshiped by the local population to get their help in attacking the camp, so he could begin gathering all the lenses for himself. Bentley maintained his masked identity when the scientists returned to the United States, and he engaged in a campaign of terror where he targeted each member in turn to gain the lens each kept to unlock the full power of the scorpion idol. Ultimately the expedition returned to Siam to recover the last lens, as one member had hidden his without ever leaving the tomb. The Scorpion overreached himself when he tried to also gain the power of his enemy, Captain Marvel, and ended up being unmasked as an ordinary man in front of his native followers. For this betrayal one of them turned the ray of the scorpion idol on Bentley, vaporizing him instantly.
