Lydia Limpet is the incorrigible assistant and main accomplice of the Bookworm. This has made her an enemy of Batman and Robin.
History
At some point, Lydia Limpet started working for the book-obsessed Gotham City criminal known as Bookworm as his assistant and main accomplice. She had a clear crush on her boss, despite his abusive behavior and violent rages towards her. When Bookworm attempts to kill Batman and Robin to steal priceless books from the Gotham City Public Library, he sends Lydia to plant a book-bomb in the Batmobile, but the assassination attempt fails when the bomb is ejected from the car and blows up in the air.
Later, when Bookworm projects a huge image of the bridge onto a warehouse wall and the Dynamic Duo trace the image to a giant projector mounted on top of a nearby bookmobile, the villains engage in a fight with the heroes and leave behind a bound and gagged Lydia in the vehicle. After the battle, Batman and Robin knock out Lydia with Batgas and then take her back to the Batcave, where they use the Hypermetric Lie-Detector on her to try and discover Bookworm's evil plan, but fail to find any useful information.
The Dynamic Duo take Lydia back to the bookmobile, where she awakens and lies to them about Bookworm's evil plan that will be set into motion at midnight. Batman then leaves, with Robin staying to look after her. Lydia tries to seduce the young hero into setting her free, but fails. The tables then turn when she manages to disable Robin with the knockout gas that hidden in a history book. Lydia uses another book to contact Bookworm and inform him about the passed out young hero. Her boss then takes Robin and ties him up within the bell of the clock tower dedicated to Thomas Wayne. If the clock strikes midnight, Robin will be banged to death against the bell twelve times.[1]
The next day after Batman saves Robin, Bookworm arranges for a giant-sized cookbook to appear in the middle of 5th and Cedar streets in downtown Gotham. After the Dynamic Duo arrive at the scene, they are let to believe that they had opened the book with a super-powered magnet from the Batmobile when in actuality it was Bookworm and Lydia who had opened it with a remote control. Batman and Robin enter the book and find themselves trapped inside it as Bookworm and Lydia try to boil them to death.
Bookworm and Lydia see this as a chance to swipe the Batmobile and drive it to the rear of the Morgan Bilt Library, where the former plans to use its Batbeam to break in and snatch all of the rare and priceless books stored within. When the heroes eventually escape, they manage to catch up to Bookworm, Lydia, and the other henchmen, who had joined them, as they prepared to use the Batbeam to break into the library. Lydia then hides in a packing crate during the fight which follows, but after all the other villains are defeated, Robin pulls her out of the box and Lydia is arrested.
While waiting outside waiting conveyance to the Gotham State Penitentiary, Bookworm and Lydia were brought into Commissioner Gordon's office to meet Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson. The Commissioner is shocked and disappointed to see her reading a book called "The World's 100 Greatest Crimes", revealing she still hasn't learnt her lesson, calling her an abandoned child. His words make Lydia hang her head and feel extremely sheepish as the book was handed to Bruce who wanted it as a souvenir. Bookworm and Lydia were then taken by Chief O'Hara and his men to prison.[2]
Somehow, Lydia eventually got out of prison and returned to help Bookworm in a new scheme. At the Gotham City Public Library, she tied up the librarian and hid her under the main desk as her boss went into a vault filled with irreplaceable rare books that he wanted to steal. When Batman and Robin arrive, Lydia poses as the librarian and shushes them as they were talking aloud, with the heroes not recognizing her. After the Dynamic Duo leaves, Lydia uses a remote control to call upon Bookworm's henchmen.
She then took the henchmen into the vault, where Batman and Robin were confronting Bookworm. Before a fight between the heroes and the villains broke out, Lydia collected all the henchmen's glasses and placed them in her purse. Throughout the battle, she consistently shushed everyone as they were making too much noise in the library. Chief O'Hara and his men then showed up as the Dynamic Duo defeated Bookworm and his henchmen, arresting Lydia and taking her away once again.[3]
