Lyrl Dox aka Brainiac 3 is the genius son of Brainiac 2 (Vril Dox II) and Stealth and one of the major antagonists of L.E.G.I.O.N.
History
Origin
Lyrl Dox was the son of the Coluan Vril Dox II and his Gryxian teammate, Stealth. He was conceived when Stealth's unstable biology caused her to go into heat and attack Vril, raping and murdering him. Luckily their team found Vril's body, and Mari'jn Bek cloned it and transferred his consciousness, restoring Vril Dox back to life.
Stealth, afraid of Vril's influence, fled to an uninhabited planet to give birth. This event brought out the truly strange nature of the Gryxian race. During the birth, her body transformed into her native, non-humanoid form, and in a feverish state, she heard the voice of the spirits of her people say, "the male is a necessary evil. He will dictate the form." Thus, her son was born a Coluan.[1] Afterwards, she decided to put the baby in the protective care of a motherly space creature, and return to the L.E.G.I.O.N..
L.E.G.I.O.N.
When Vril Dox's former lover, Ig'nea, kidnapped the infant Lyrl, Vril and his team defeated her and father was finally introduced to son. Realizing his own traumatic adolescence would interfere with his ability to raise his son, Vril surrendered custody to Stealth.[2]
Lyrl was born with a twelfth level intellect, and was able to speak seven languages at a year old. When Lyrl's hyperintelligence came to Vril's attention, he, impressed, blindly elevated Lyrl to a senior position in the L.E.G.I.O.N.[3] Lyrl began plotting to take over his organization. Lyrl used his father's "enhanced charisma program" to brainwash the team's operatives one by one. It didn't take long for Vril Dox II to figure what Lyrl was doing, and he attempted to strip him of authority.
Vril was too late and Lyrl transmitted his charisma program to all of the team personnel, brainwashing them to blindly serve him. He immediately ordered his father to be killed.[4] Vril and a few other members managed to escape and formed a group called the R.E.B.E.L.S.. With Vril out of the picture, Lyrl was able to fully take control of the L.E.G.I.O.N. and use his power to become a dictator, changing history books to favor him and committing genocide against anyone who threatened his reign.
R.E.B.E.L.S.
The R.E.B.E.L.S. were able to evade the L.E.G.I.O.N. at every turn. Lyrl's clients began to complain about poor service, so he invited eighty seven world leaders to mourn his father's death. During the service he was able to brainwash them all.
Whilst on the run, Vril encountered the demon known as Neron. Vril Dox II made a deal with this devil, to destroy the Ice Man, and to regain control of the L.E.G.I.O.N. from his son. In exchange, Vril Dox II agreed to attach his debt to his family line which would last 1,000 years.[5]
Neron gives him the advice; "Lyrl Dox cannot be defeated... until you remember whose son he is." He discovers that pain cancels the mind control's effects, so when they returned to Cairn he shoots himself and Stealth, preventing any effects of the charisma device. When Vril remembers Neron's advice, he attacks Lyrl and injects him with a drug that negatively affects his Gryxian biology. Vril Dox II was then able to chemically lobotomize Lyrl, suppressing his super-intelligence and reverting him to a natural infant.
R.E.B.E.L.S. v2
Fifteen years later, Lyrl Dox resurfaces again after having been raised by Stealth in a jungle on the planet Voorl. It is revealed that his mother died defending him from rogue L.E.G.I.O.N. robots that had been hacked and sent to hunt them down. Lyrl Dox is resentful toward his father for leaving them in the jungle of planet Voorl to return to serving as the leader of L.E.G.I.O.N., and he originally thinks that his father is behind the murder of his mother.
Vril explains that Starro's forces were the ones who killed Stealth while trying to get to Lyrl Dox. When Starro confronts Lyrl during an escape attempt, Lyrl hands himself over to protect Strata, Garv, and their child.[6]
Starro undoes Lyrl's chemical lobotomy and keeps him as a slave, using Lyrl's super intelligence to strengthen his forces. In secret, Lyrl was plotting a way to help his father defeat Starro.
