Magnaman was a spy and assassin named Klarz who proclaimed himself the "Superman of Duxania".

Klarz was part of the rebel underground seeking to dethrone Duxania's king and became lab assistant to Duxania's greatest scientist, Sir Damien Thork. Thork invented a serum which could give Kryptonian-type powers to humans and other animals. He successfully tested this serum on a gopher, which burrowed away through the floor of Thork's lab. Klarz then used Thork's serum to give himself powers and adopted a costume similar to Superman's except with an M-emblem on his chest rather than an S-emblem. Magnaman then fatally wounded Thork and escaped. Before dying, Thork told the king of Duxania that Magnaman and all subjects of the serum would have one weakness. However, Thork died before specifying the weakness. The king sent his daughter to Metropolis to bring Jimmy Olsen in hope that he might help the royal family figure out Magnaman's weakness. Later, Magnaman posed as Superman at a parade in Duxania. He performed the super-feat of being buried in a coffin underground for two hours, while secretly planning to bore into Duxania's treasure cave and loot it, framing the king for embezzlement. Magnaman's plan failed when the super-gopher from Thork's lab burrowed into the coffin. The serum's weakness was that its subjects would immediately lose their powers upon coming into contact with one another. Therefore, Magnaman and the gopher both lost their powers and Magnaman suffocated to death in the coffin.
