Manhunter #19 is an issue of the series Manhunter (Volume 1) with a cover date of November, 1989.

Synopsis for "Shadow Warrior"

Dumas thanks Kazuo for his loyalty and cunning in bringing the Shaw family to Dumas under the pretense of offering them protection. Only James falls for this deceit and Kazuo attempts to avenge his father's assassination but Dumas drops him quickly and prepares to kill him but Ryu intervenes suggesting Kazuo keep Kazou alive as the majority of the followers are only loyal to the Hasegawa family. Ryu suggests Dumas make Kazuo his messenger to Mark Shaw and Dumas agrees but cuts off part of Kazuo's little finger as punishment. The Shaws are taken prisoner.

It is now four days since Kazuo's visit and Manhunter fruitlessly continues his hunt for Dumas. He has been using himself as bait wanting to confront Dumas on his own turf but Kazuo finds him and tells him what has happened in Japan. Mark makes flight arrangements to Tokyo and sends a file marked "In case of death" to Oracle.

Back in Tokyo Kazuo tells Dumas that Mark Shaw is coming for him. Ryu brings a message to the Shaws and takes out the guard. Manhunter arrives, slipping a note to his family telling them to trust the tea-bringer, and Ryu leads them to safety telling them that Mark is distrcating Dumas so they may escape. Manhunter and Dumas have a long battle with Dumas fatally cutting Manhunter's torso. Before he can die, however, Dumas knocks away the Manhunter mask to find it was Kazuo dressed as Manhunter. In his dying breaths, Kazuo tells Dumas that the Shaw family is free, those loyal to Dumas are dead, the estate is destroyed and that Mark Shaw is honor bound to defeat Dumas. The building explodes behind Dumas who swears vengeance on Mark Shaw.

Notes

  • Saints and Sinners Part 2 of 6
  • Due to a retcon presented in Issue 13 of the third Manhunter series, Mark Shaw was purportedly brainwashed into having a second, hidden personality known as Dumas. It is unclear if there was ever a real Dumas, if Shaw always unknowingly acted as Dumas, and/or if "encounters" with Dumas were all imagined or hallucinated. Thus certain aspects of this story may not be considered canon.
