Manta, the Flaming Doom was the first foe the Metal Men ever faced.
History
Manta was originally a prehistoric manta-ray that survived the radioactive meteor shower that wiped out the dinosaurs, becoming a radioactive entity that gained destructive superpowers.
After surviving the extinction event, it got lodged in a glacier for eons until shifting ice freed it, setting the creature loose upon the 20th Century. It then flew to the United States, where it destroyed a lighthouse with its gaze and a military plane. Its biggest target though was New York City's own Chrysler Building, melting it down with its radioactive heat rays. Col. Henry Casper is then forced to call upon the brilliant "science fiction age" inventor, Dr. Will Magnus. The creature was then defeated by the combined might of Dr. Magnus' mighty Metal Men. It was coated in lead and sank into a huge undersea trench where it died.
