Maple White Land is a large, hidden plateau in the South American country of Rioguay which is inhabited by dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures from every known geological age. The plateau's other inhabitants are the Accala people, a tribe of humans who had been marooned there for generations, and the fierce Ape-Men, who waged constant war against the Accala.
In 1911, English anthropologist Professor George Edward Challenger first came to knowledge of Maple White Land, after he came into possession of maps and drawings made by an American named Maple White, after whom the plateau is named. Professor Challenger, accompanied with Lord John Roxton, Edward Malone, and Professor Summerlee, embarked to Maple White Land, and helped lead the Accala to total victory over the Ape-Men. Challenger's expedition returned to England in 1912, while bringing along a lived pterodactyl to prove the truth of the expedition's findings. However, the pterodactyl escaped and flew away, westward over the Atlantic Ocean, in a doomed attempt to return to its birthplace. Despite the Challenger expedition's discovery, Maple White Land was soon relegated, by conventional geographic scholars and skeptical journalists, to the realm of myth and legend. This was partly the result of Professor Challenger's canceling future expeditions to the plateau, following the death of Lord John.
Ten years after the Challenger expedition, early metahuman Hugo Danner later came to learn about Maple White Land, and initially traveled there in search of rough diamonds, in order to finance his scheme to create a race of super-humans. But after encountering the Accala, Danner changed his mind and decided that the Accala would be the progenitors of his new race, which he dubbed the "Sons of Dawn."
More than a decade later, troops of Nazi German soldiers invaded the plateau, and quickly came into conflict with Danner and the Sons of Dawn. The Germans were ultimately chased away, and many were killed by the prehistoric wildlife.
In 1942, Hugo Danner's son, Arnold, and Georgina Challenger, granddaughter of George Challenger, came to Maple White Land in search of the elder Danner. The presence of Arnold and Georgina eventually led to the Sons of Dawn leaving the plateau and attacking Rioguay, in an insane attempt to conquer humanity. But after coming into conflict with the All-Star Squadron, the Sons of Dawn fell victim to outside diseases, due to their isolated upbringing, which had prevented them from developing any sort of immunity.
