The Tattooed Man, also known as "the living ink," is a former patient of the Sanctuary mental health facility.
History
The Tattooed Man had developed a fatalistic attitude, and checked himself into Sanctuary, a safe haven for heroes suffering from trauma and mental health issues,[1] where he stayed for at least two months.[2] When a mysterious force caused a fellow patient to lose control of his powers in distress, he and others who had approached out of concern for the patient's wellbeing were seemingly fatally wounded and killed at the scene.[3]
However, the Tattooed Man and his fellow patients were in reality replaced with clones from the 35th Century at the moment of their supposed deaths by the time-traveler Gold Beetle, who brought the survivors to the Timepoint, a place outside of history. From there, the Tattooed Man and the others returned to the 21st Century to help the Flash Family fight off an invasion of Earth at super-speed by the Fraction.[4]

Notes
- Mark Richards/Tattooed Man was created by Geoff Johns and Ethan Van Sciver, first appearing in Green Lantern (Volume 4) #9. However, Mark Richards/Tattooed Man first appeared as part of Prime Earth continuity in Heroes in Crisis #3 by Tom King, Clay Mann, and Lee Weeks.
- Although this version of the Tattooed Man appeared as a member of the Secret Society of Super-Villains in Deathstroke Inc. #7 and Dark Crisis: War Zone #1, these stories took place between his apparent death[3] and the revelation of his survival,[4] and are likely intended to depict the other Tattooed Man.
