Quote1 Is not hate reason enough? No?! Then perhaps it is because I am a freak! My mind cut off from the rest of you! I see the fear and revulsion with which people treat me! It doesn't matter to me why I hate -- only that I do and that is enough! And you, J'onn J'onzz, I hate most of all! Quote2

Synopsis for "Abandon All Hope"

After Martian Manhunter's craft crashed, his teammates assumed that he was dead and were still divided over whether he was guilty or not. Then, Wonder Woman recalled seeing another Martian's face materializing over J'onn's. Then, the team received a call from Cameron Chase, who informed them about Martian Manhunter being a prime suspect in Karen Smith's murder and requested that the team turned over any information of the Martian's whereabouts. Superman claimed that Martian Manhunter died in a spaceship malfunction and that he held his skull in his hands. However, Chase asked for a sample of the remains in order to confirm his death. Afterwards, they suspected that whoever could be manipulating them and "killed" Martian Manhunter could still be in the Watchtower. Malefic observed them and decided to kill them all, believing that they still respected his brother. Steel learned that the Martian teleported something to Z'onn Z'orr before sabotaging the teleporter. On Z'onn Z'orr, the Martian's severed arm began growing a new body, as he struggled to regain his memories.

In the past, on Mars, in the early days of the Great Plague, the Father of the Elders claimed that the Curse of Hronmeer was artificially created and declared that Ma'alefa'ak must be put to death. J'onn vouched for his brother and the Father of the Elders "charged him with learning the truth" behind the cause of the plague. The Manhunter confronted his brother and learned that he planned to wipe out their race because he hated his people and wanted to kill those with telepathic ability.

In the present, the weakened Martian decided that he needed more mass to fight his brother. He turned to the zo'ok, a Martian flower, for protection, allowing him to gain mass before using Z'onn Z'orr to fly back to the Watchtower, where the Flash was knocked unconscious by Malefic impersonating Batman.
